On Thursday, the Washington Redskins announced the signing of former West Virginia University and Miami Dolphins quarterback Pat White.
Before AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III took the NFL by storm in 2012 behind the deadly read option attack, White was part of a different revolution of sorts.
With the Redskins building their roster in preparation for training camp in Richmond this summer, find out just how successful the dual-threat player has been through the years and how the Burgundy and Gold have added another weapon to an already diverse, quick-strike unit.
Griffin III’s speed is simply undeniable as he can simply cruise past defenders with ease. Normally the fastest players on an NFL team come from the backfield or the secondary, but the Redskins have been blessed with a quarterback with blazing speed.
Actually, make that two quarterbacks with lighting fast moves.
Normally we list a player’s accomplishments at the collegiate, but like Griffin III’s resume, we simply don’t have enough time to glaze over everything he did at West Virginia.
What we can point out about White during his time in Morganstown is that he was the first quarterback in NCAA history to start and win four bowl games, was a freshman All-American, was selected as a First Team All-Big East representative three times and accumulated 103 touchdowns.
Many wondered whether White had a future in the NFL as a quarterback and believed that his only hope of securing a roster spot was to make a position change. But after throwing for 95 yards and tacking on an additional 31 yards on the ground, White was named the 2009 Senior Bowl MVP and wiped away any doubts that he could be a quarterback at the next level.
As mentioned Griffin III and White have some similarities due to their success both throwing the pigskins and tucking it in and running with it. Both men run a sub-4.6 40 and have verticals that reach over 35 inches. While Redskins fans will always remember where they were last April when the three-time Super Bowl winning champs selected the Heisman-winning Griffin III, White’s signing may be under the radar.
But don’t discredit his talent transitioning to the NFL. Proof, check out this video of a 33-yard scamper against the New England Patriots in 2009.
After a few years away from the game, White is back to wreak havoc on confused opponents.
Please join us in welcoming him to Redskins Nation.
