Quarterback Robert Griffin III has been a busy man since his memorable debut season ended in January. He has been spotted attending various events back in the Lone Star State, has been working out at Redskins Park, and was awarded the AP Rookie of the Year at the NFL awards show on the eve of Super Bowl XLVII.
Recently, he has been spending time at his alma mater attending basketball games and being honored with the unveiling of his own street. Today, however, he was spending time under a different media spotlight.
Find out what Griffin III was doing back in Texas and what special honor he received here:
Griffin III returned home to a plethora of welcoming arms from cheerful Texans as he was being honored for his career in football at the Texas State Capital in Austin.
After bursting onto the season against the New Orleans Saints, the 2012 second overall draft selection quickly built a cult following that, to be honest, has never been matched in league history. He shattered league jersey sales records, many of which were of his youngest supporters.
“This is the kind of athlete we would want our sons and daughters to emulate,” said state Sen. Brian Birdwell, according to The Statesman.
With his family by his side, Griffin III was on hand to witness Texas Senator Kirk Watson announce the new “Robert Griffin III Scholarship” to loud cheers by all in attendance. I wonder if anyone did Griffin III’s world-famous “Griffining” celebration instead?
It was a honor that Watson will not forget and relished the moment that he got to be with his fellow Baylor Bear alumnus.
Watson was able to cap off the unforgettable day for the duo as he handed Griffin III an American flag that had been flown over the capital.
Rarely do you hear of a Redskins player being so popular in the state that hosts the Dallas Cowboys, however, after his epic Heisman winning career and dazzling everyone in his return on Thanksgiving Day, his popularity in the state may be higher than ever. Video of Griffin III responding to the day can be found here. Special thanks to the Baylor Football Twitter account for providing pictures throughout the event.
Congrats to Griffin III on another special day!
