What Do RG3 And Honey Badger Share?

Posted by Chris Herting on February 26, 2013 – 5:40 pm

2011-Heisman

Besides awesome nicknames.

NFL Draft guru Mike Mayock says that CB Tyrann Mathieu, or the “Honey Badger,” is a Combine ‘wildcard’ and no one really knows the NFL future of the 5′ 9″ 186 pound cornerback.

But what do Redskins QB Robert Griffin III and Mathieu have in common?

Well, they both were 2011 Heisman Trophy finalists. The obvious difference is that Griffin III went on to win the 2011 Heisman and Mathieu did not (hold your applause, please).

From the Heisman ceremony, their lives went in two starkly different directions. Griffin III went on to become a Combine sensation, Draft day hero, savior of a franchise and face of the NFL.

In that same span, Mathieu has been dismissed from LSU, arrested on drug charges, put through rehab, and is now fighting for his future in football.

The two that once had greatness in common may seem like an odd couple, but according to the almighty Twitter, the two have remained in contact over the last year and change, as evidenced by a recent Honey Badger tweet:

According to Griffin III’s Twitter account (@RGIII), the quarterback reached out to Mathieu to give him a little word of advice. Whatever that advice entailed will likely remain between the two young men, but if Mathieu really has turned over a new leaf, he would be wise to heed Griffin III.

After all, Griffin III’s leadership transcends his own play, as his teammates elected him a team captain during the team’s bye week.

Keep in mind that once upon a time, Mathieu was no slouch himself at LSU  (2011)—an All-American and Heisman Trophy finalist who was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-SEC and was a projected Top 10 pick before trouble came his way.

There’s been an outcry from Redskins  fans to address the need for help in the secondary in this April’s draft or through free agency and there’s no doubt that Mathieu could fill that void.

If you judge Mathieu based on his last few months on his Twitter feed (@Mathieu_Era), he’s motivated to take all of the necessary steps to silence his critics:

The question is will the Redskins take a flyer on a talented player who was suspended for violating LSU’s substance abuse policy? Only time will tell. And whether or not the two Heisman hopefuls will reunite in May for team OTAs in Ashburn, Va. will be determined during April’s draft.

Remember that at one time, Griffin III and Mathieu were both on top of the football world, and although Mathieu suffered a temporary fall from grace, he has rebounded to say and do all of the right things in the public eye.

One may ask, has Mathieu learned from his mistakes?

The Redskins, and 31 other teams will seek to find that out in the coming weeks. But the prospect of RGIII and the ‘Honey Badger’ leading their respective backfield for years to come is, at the least, an intriguing thought for Redskins fans.

What do YOU think about the prospect of Tyrann Mathieu, a.k.a “Honey Badger”, in a burgundy and gold uniform?

I think we need a ballhawk like Tyrann on our Def to compliment DHALL. With him, we could possibly move Dhall to safety (if needed which i dont think it is) and then have a terrifying ballhawk duo in the two.

Off field issues aren’t a concern for me with him because he has hit rock bottom and will do anything to save his career, guys like trent williams and fred davis will make sure he doesnt make the mistakes that they had.

I like his talent, but he’s short We need height to keep up with the big WR and TE’s. If the Redskins draft him…fill his contract with clauses. NO MORE “ME” people in the locker room. PLEASE!

    HTTR!

I say take a chance on him. His talent is throuh the roof. I believe he learned his lesson. Surround him with veterans and positive influences like RGIII. He’ll be ok. Nickel corner for sure. Will turn out to be a pretty decent player. Watch!

I would personally love it if The Redskins drafted the Honey Badger. What he lacks in size he makes up for in explosive play making. The guy always seems to be around the football. As for his substance abuse issues, I think he would get a reality check real quick from the leaders we have on defense if Mathieu were to slip up. We tend to have a little history with some of our players violating the league’s substance abuses policy but in the end they learned and Mathieu should also from not only his but their mistakes as well. The Honey Badger is definitely worth the risk! Mathieu would look to sweet in Burgundy and Gold. HTTR!

I’m not sure. Being we are limited with draft picks this year and our cap issues, we need to draft as close as we can get to a sure thing and a good fit for our team, as we can!! Maybe it’s the “honeybadger”, idk..

NO DOUGHT THE HONEY BADGER IS GIFTED,HOWEVER HE HAS AN ISSUE IN HIS CHARACTER THAT IS DETRIMENTAL TO HIS HEALTH AND HOW FOCUSED WILL HE BE ? SUBSTANCE ABUSE TOUCHES MORE THEN THE INDIVIDUAL THAT USES THEM.OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD ,DRUGS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO A LACK OF CONCENTRATION,MISSED MEETINGS,MISSED COVERAGE ASSIGNMENTS AND ANGER PROBLEMS.THINK HARD ABOUT THE TYPE OF CULTURE YOU ALLOW TO INFILTRATE THE GREATEST GAME ON TURF!

With Orakpo coming back, our pass rush will alone make our secondary better. That being said, Mathieu is a 1st round talent that we could acquire for almost nothing. Otherwise we are left with second tiered talent (Remeber Justin Tyron or how about Dejon Gomes now?) and we will be looking at another second tiered dback for the next 2 years. We cant afford one in FA and we dont have a 1st rd pick to use. Might as well take a chance on him in either the 2nd or 3rd rd – Let Tanard Jackson start at Safety, resign DHall (I know everyone hates him – but he wil re structure and we need him) Merriweather is coming back who we all know, if he can stay healthy should be a pro bowl caliber player in the skins scheme and then add a nickle guy like Mathieu who has the ball skills AND SHINED IN THE SEC!!! Heisman candidate as a dback and underclassmen? I think hes worth a shot. We can grab a quality Lineman in the 3rd to add depth. This way we will be drafting the best available throughout the entire draft by starting with Mathieu…Remember, Shanny drafted MAurice Clarett in the 3rd rd…dont think he wont take Mathieu in the 2nd.

I would love to see him with the skins…as a guy that played undersized in HS i have a soft spot for short guy that have big play ability. I was a huge fan of him back in 2011 and i was sad to see him mess up. I feel as tho he is getting himself together and he will be a GREAT asset for our secondary. can’t teach natural playmaking ability

Yea! I think We Should Pick Hm As A 3rd Round Pick. He Will Be Great As A Nickel Back & The A Big Play Maker On Returning Kicks.
