One of the best parts of my job on Redskins.com is that every now and then I come across a picture or a story that makes me stop and remember the reach of NFL football and the Washington Redskins.
In this case, it turned out to be both.
The above photo was voted the 2012 Marine Corps Top Shot, and was taken during Operation Tageer Shamal (Pashto for “Winter Offensive”) in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Deep in the heart of conflict, two Marines and their loyal dog “Blue” found the peaceful serenity of a nap. The photographer, Cpl. Reece Lodder had his camera nearby, but said he paused and took in the scene before snapping a photo.
Via the Marine’s Blog:
“The photo is an unfiltered expression of life as I observed it in that moment. Challenging and exhausting, but rich in beautiful moments that are waiting to be observed and captured … if only we have the eyes to see them as they unfold.
“This photo is powerful because of its richness in feeling and theme. It contains elements that interest such a wide variety of people — dirty, hardened Marines; challenging, tiring operations in Afghanistan; Hatley’s golden Labrador retriever; and of course, the Redskins blanket.”
Other than the overwhelming feeling of pride, there’s nothing more that I can add to a story like this. I strongly encourage everyone to check out the full blog post to learn more about the three Marines shown above.
Thank you to all that serve (both two and four-legged) and take the Washington Redskins with you. Hail to the troops and hail to the Redskins!
