On Tuesday January 15th, Redskins fullback Darrel Young spoke to students at the PHILLIPS School in Annandale, Virginia.
Young, smiling from ear to ear as he was honored that PHILLIPS invited him, made a surprise appearance as the youngsters were in pure awe that a Redskins player was at their school.
He touched on a variety of subjects during his time at PHILLIPS to include how to live a healthy, active lifestyle, his path to the NFL, and to never give up on your dreams.

The PHILLIPS School provides special education instruction in small group settings with a strong emphasis on preparing the student body with life lessons that they will be able to carry with them through their lifetime.
As a professional football player who is constantly taking a beating on his body, Young knows the importance of staying healthy. As he spoke to the student population, he led them through an exercise regimen that incorporated some football drills.
Along with Young, the PHILLIPS physical education coach showed the kids how to do the movements.
“Darrel was a class act and left a positive impression on our students about working hard and following their dreams,” said the coach after their joint teaching session. “Most students only see athletes on TV or while playing video games- it was special to have Darrel here for a day.”
Young’s journey to starting fullback on a league-leading rushing attack took several unexpected turns. After a fantastic college career at perennial NCAA Division I FCS powerhouse Villanova, Young had his sights set on being drafted to an NFL team. However, draft day came and went and Young didn’t hear his name called. Shortly after, he got a call from the Redskins, who were impressed with his skills set, and was signed.
He slowly worked his way from practice squad member to starting fullback over a two year span. Throughout his rise to the starting lineup he never gave up once, showing that with hard work you can reach your dreams.
“Darrel taught us to never give up on your dreams,” said one student. “It really meant something special to meet a professional athlete.”
Another student was inspired by Young’s remarks as he said that he taught them to”never give up on your dreams no matter how hard it is. It was great to learn about his life experiences and that he was a hard worker from when he was young until now.”
Young was touched by the fact that the PHILLIPS School gave him the opportunity to take time of out the typical school schedule to speak to the kids. It was a day that he will never forget.
