Young Knows Keys To Beating Flacco

As the Ravens arrive in New Orleans today for Super Bowl XLVII Redskins’ fullback Darrel Young probably wishes it were his team representing the NFC on Sunday instead of the San Francisco 49ers.

Beside the obvious reason that the Super Bowl is the pinnacle of the National Football League, Young has had success in his football career against Ravens’ quarterback Joe Flacco some may not be aware of.

Young played his college football as a linebacker at the University of Villanova. Flacco threw one pass in two seasons at the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to the University of Delaware. Both teams are FCS members of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Flacco and Young’s college careers overlapped, giving them two opportunities to faceoff against each other. Both were starters on opposite sides of the ball for both contests. Here’s a look back:

In 2006 Flacco and the Blue Hens saw a 20 point lead vanish in the second half as Young and the Wildcats were able to rally for a 28-27 victory. Flacco threw for 337 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception, while Young recorded 3 tackles.

The second and final college contest between the two came in 2007. Flacco and his team found themselves in a dogfight tied at ten late in the game. Once again the Wildcats rallied late, kicking two field goals in the final three minutes to pull out a 16-10 victory.

Flacco finished the day with 145 yards, one touchdown and one interception. On the other side of the ball, Young turned in a strong performance recording 7 solo tackles and 11 total tackles.

Young, now a fullback, and Flacco have been in the NFL for four and five years respectively, but have only played each other once in the regular season.

That game was just this past season in a Week 14 matchup at FedEx Field. In the midst of the Redskins’ seven-game win streak that finished off the season, Robert Girrin III went down late and Kirk Cousins came in to provide amazing late game heroics. The Redskins’ won 31-28 in overtime, thus bringing Darrel Young’s career record against Joe Flacco to an undefeated 3-0.

These two will with out a doubt have further opportunities to face off against each other, and the out come of those games is uncertain. Similarly uncertain is what would have happened if the Redskins and Ravens faced off in this Sunday’s game.

What is certain is that for now Darrel Young can say that he has never lost to potential Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco.
