Griffin III Makes Rookie Heisman History

As the first mock drafts start appearing on national football websites, it is a reminder of the excitement in Washington almost one year ago, as Redskins fans imagined the possibility to trading up for Robert Griffin III.

It seemed unlikely at the time, that a front office that had hoarded draft picks since arriving in 2010, would trade multiple first round picks to the St. Louis Rams for the rights to Robert Griffin III, but it was a fun dream to dream.

And then it came true.

Robert Griffin III, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, became an obsession in Washington, as fans Photoshoppe’d him into a Redskins’ jersey and chanted ‘R-G-3!’ Those chants only got louder, as he was drafted by the Redskins, won the starting job and then performed at a superstar level–just as he had in Heisman-winning season at Baylor.

The Heisman award is given to the top collegiate player, which history has shown is little indication for professional success.  The Heisman landscape is highlighted by NFL Hall of Famers Marcus Allen, Roger Staubach and Barry Sanders, but is also littered with NFL duds Troy Smith, Matt Leinart and Jason White.

In his first season in the NFL, Griffin III appears destined to fall into the former category, rather than the latter. Find out how Robert’s first season stacks up to other Heisman-winning quarterbacks here:

In his rookie campaign, Griffin III helped the Redskins clinch their first NFC East since 1999. He finished the season with a record of 9-6 as a starter. Do you know who the last Heisman winning quarterback was to win that many games in his first season?

Any guesses…any?

The answer: No one! That’s right–none of the former Heisman-winning quarterbacks won as many games as Robert did in his first professional season. Before Robert won the award in as a junior, there were 29 other Heisman winners who played quarterback.

Griffin III should be pleased with his instant success in the NFL, but surely has his eyes set on a much more important goal: to become only the third Heisman-winning quarterback to also win the Super Bowl during his career.

Congratulations to Robert for tacking on another honor, and good luck in the future!

This has been the best season to watch since 1991-1992. This season is my favorite. For years I’ve been waiting for a Superbowl win. It didn’t happen this year, but now I have more hope than ever before. I’ve only attended two home games. I need to plan ahead to make it for next season. I live in Roswell, NM, so it looks like I’m taking vacation in DC. RG3 needs to get healthy and stay healthy. HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!
