It wasn’t quite good enough schtick to be a segment on MTV’s “Punk’d,” but Robert Griffin III pulled one on Mike Shanahan today.
The rookie quarterback sat in on his head coach’s weekly press conference at Redskins Park, and even took to the microphone to ask Shanahan a question.
“Coach? We just wanted to know … ” Griffin III asked. “What did you do for New Year’s?”
Shanahan — who was standing at the lectern in the Redskins Park auditorium — must not have seen Griffin III sneak into the seats, because he burst into laughter upon seeing his quarterback in the theater-styled seats.
“You got me by surprise there,” Shanahan said. “Who is this guy?”
But the veteran head coach put himself together long enough to answer the question.
“Tried to put a good game plan together” Shanahan told Griffin III. “I wasn’t sure how healthy you were, so it was hard without you calling me.”
Shanahan took the bit all in stride.
“You got me good,” he said with a laugh.
Griffin III, by the way, will be good to go for Sunday’s Wild Card Round playoff matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. His backup, fellow rookie Kirk Cousins, missed Wednesday’s practice with the flu, Shanahan said.
The Redskins last Sunday had three quarterbacks active for a game for the first time all season, as Griffin III, Cousins and veteran Rex Grossman all suited up. Shanahan said after the 28-18 win over the Cowboys that Grossman dressed in favor of safety DeJon Gomes, who was unable to recover from an injury in time to be activated prior to the game.
