Griffin III: Newest Member Of The Media?

Posted by Andrew Walker on January 2, 2013 – 3:05 pm

It wasn’t quite good enough schtick to be a segment on MTV’s “Punk’d,” but Robert Griffin III pulled one on Mike Shanahan today.

The rookie quarterback sat in on his head coach’s weekly press conference at Redskins Park, and even took to the microphone to ask Shanahan a question.

Griffin III“Coach? We just wanted to know … ” Griffin III asked. “What did you do for New Year’s?”

Shanahan — who was standing at the lectern in the Redskins Park auditorium — must not have seen Griffin III sneak into the seats, because he burst into laughter upon seeing his quarterback in the theater-styled seats.

“You got me by surprise there,” Shanahan said. “Who is this guy?”

But the veteran head coach put himself together long enough to answer the question.

“Tried to put a good game plan together” Shanahan told Griffin III. “I wasn’t sure how healthy you were, so it was hard without you calling me.”

Shanahan took the bit all in stride.

“You got me good,” he said with a laugh.

Griffin III, by the way, will be good to go for Sunday’s Wild Card Round playoff matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. His backup, fellow rookie Kirk Cousins, missed Wednesday’s practice with the flu, Shanahan said.

The Redskins last Sunday had three quarterbacks active for a game for the first time all season, as Griffin III, Cousins and veteran Rex Grossman all suited up. Shanahan said after the 28-18 win over the Cowboys that Grossman dressed in favor of safety DeJon Gomes, who was unable to recover from an injury in time to be activated prior to the game.

What does it mean that Grossman “suited up in favor of saftey Dejon Gomes”?

nwskinszFan — Here’s what Coach Shanahan said after the Cowboys game:

“Dejon Gomes, we thought he was going to be up. We worked him out before the game. We could see that he was not able to cut like he would. With the guys that we had inactive, I thought Rex [Grossman] was the next best person to be up. Nobody could really help us in the special team area, or either first or second team. So, there would not have been a difference maker there. So when I took a look at all my options, I said there’s no question that Rex should be up.”

teams can only have 53 men take the field any give n game.. So, since Gomes wasn’t ready to go, they suited up Rex in that spot.

@ NWSKINZFAN It means had Dejon been healthy they would not have had Grossman suit up for the game. Meaning he’d be unavailable to play.

No, Rex would’ve still been available as the Emergency QB. But once the Emergency QB goes into the game, the other active QBs cannot return to the game. So the benefit to the Skins (considering RGIII’s knee) is that if he tweaks it a bit, then Cousins comes in and gets the wind knocked out of him, Grossman can come into the game for a couple of snaps without losing both RGIII and Cousins for the rest of the game.

Speaking of Rex, wouldn’t it be an interesting read to get his P.O.V. on how he must feel with RG3 coming in and fulfilling his NFC East championship prediction from 2010 ?! For what its worth, I understand he has been very supportive of RG3 and Cousins – a true teammate.

Did he call him Heisman? lol

The emergency QB was removed last year. So if Rex is not active he cannot play, period. Here is a link discussing the removal of the rule starting 2011.

    Hilarious from RGIII. That’s awesome.

As for Rex, I have been very critical of his play on the field. He’d be a top 10 quarterback if he didn’t turn the ball over so much. The picks and fumbles will haunt him his entire career. However, this season he has been the consummate teammate. A real class act from what I’ve heard. And if he helps develop RGIII and Kirk then he deserves that roster spot.

Artist David Bednarz just sold a mixed media 20×30 canvas of RG3, it will be hanging in the window of Arts In The Village Gallery in Leesburg for the month of Jan. His show will be on Jan 25th…….this is one to see!!….the portrait is AMAZING!!
