‘Playbook:’ Redskins’ Coverage Vs. Dallas

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 29, 2012 – 4:44 pm

How can the Redskins’ secondary improve this time around against the Dallas Cowboys?

The three-man crew at the NFL Network’s “Playbook” explored this very topic this week.

Though the crew of Brian Baldinger, Sterling Sharpe and former Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb each felt the Redskins would come out victorious in their matchup tomorrow night vs. the Cowboys, they pointed to a few areas of improvement to focus on for the Redskins’ defense in the video above:

- In the Thanksgiving Day game between the Redskins and Cowboys, Dallas quarterback Tony Romo was able to beat a double A-Gap blitz through the inside by throwing into the Redskins’ man-to-man coverage and anticipate the route by tight end Jason Witten.

- On another play, the Redskins’ defense shows a Tampa Cover 2 defense and has middle linebacker London Fletcher playing zone coverage across the middle. Romo was able to stare down one receiver to get the defense to bite before finding wide receiver Dwayne Harris for a nice gain.

- They also highlighted Redskins cornerback Domonique Johnson in last week’s game vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. The “Playbook” crew thinks he wasn’t playing close enough to his receiver — in one case, he was burnt for a touchdown by Jeremy Maclin, and in another, he allowed another completion and his man to escape to the outside.

CHIME IN: What do YOU think the Redskins’ secondary needs to do to improve against the Cowboys this time around? Feel free to comment below.

Shutting down Dallas’ run game was key last time for the Redskins. It forced Romo to play catch up and try and win it with his arm. The thing our defense needs to do is keep the pressure on and keep scoring even if they have to run up the score because Romo has been extraordinary all season at coming from behind.

Disguising defenses at the snap will confuse Romo. Do this enough and he will start to press and throw into double coverage. This also will cause him to hold the ball longer. This will give the rush time to get to him. Giving him multiple looks after the snap will cause indecision. Washington has been doing this very well that last 4 weeks. Tackling is a MUST, got to get Dez to the ground.

Do not go into that stupid soft prevent defense rushing only 3 lineman. Keep pressure on Romo every play no matter what the score or down & distance.
