NFL Films: Redskins-Cowboys Preview

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 29, 2012 – 4:26 pm

The Washington Redskins on Sunday play host to the Dallas Cowboys at FedExField. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

FedExField is an open-concept stadium with a natural-grass playing surface. The stadium seats 85,000.

The Redskins on Sunday are looking to clinch their first playoff appearance since the 2007 season. Washington also defeated Dallas, 27-6, at the end of that season to clinch their playoff berth.

Washington enters the game at 9-6 following their 27-20 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter before the Redskins scored all 27 points in the second and third quarters, and then held off the Eagles at the end. Washington’s first two scores came via Kai Forbath field goals, as the kicker broke the NFL record for consecutive field goals to begin a career (17).

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III completed 16-of-24 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns to Joshua Morgan and Santana Moss. He was also intercepted once for just the fifth time this season. Running back Alfred Morris ran 22 times for 91 yards and a touchdown, while wide receiver Pierre Garçon had seven catches for 89 yards. The defense was led by outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, who had five tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Middle linebacker London Fletcher also had an interception, his fifth of the season.

The Cowboys enter Sunday’s game at 8-7 following their 34-31 overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints at Cowboys Stadium. Dallas was trailing 31-17 midway through the fourth quarter before scoring two unanswered touchdowns to tie the game by the end of regulation. Saints kicker Garrett Hartley’s 20-yard field goal in overtime won the game for New Orleans.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo led the way, completing 26-of-43 passes for 416 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Dez Bryant had nine catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns, one of which was a 58-yard strike. Cornerback Morris Claiborne led the Dallas defense with a game-best 10 tackles and a forced fumble.

The Redskins-Cowboys game will be televised by NBC.

On radio, the game will be broadcast locally on ESPN 980 and the Redskins Radio Network.  Larry Michael calls the play-by-play with former Redskins and Hall of Famers Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff adding color commentary.  Former Redskin Rick ‘Doc’ Walker reports from the sidelines.
