Behind The Scenes: SNF Introductions

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 29, 2012 – 3:54 pm

One of the more popular aspects of NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” are its introductions of the starters during the first quarter.

Instead of simply showing a graphic listing the player’s photo, position, uniform number and college attended, NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” comes to the team’s facility in the week leading up to the game and films the starters actually saying their names and schools out loud.

The NBC crew was at Redskins Park on Thursday filming the Washington players for their introductions, and we were there to get some behind-the-scenes footage of our own.

It’s actually a pretty fascinating process.

Each player sits down in front of a green screen and a camera and is first asked to look down at the ground and, on the count of three, they look up and hold for about 15 seconds. In that time, they can blink and make whatever faces they want — they just can’t talk.

Then, the player begins by looking to his right, and then, again, on a count of three, looking toward the camera and holding that position for 15 seconds.

After those two sequences, the player is filmed saying their name and their college. Some players say their name and something else that identifies where they’re from — Pierre Garçon, for example, said, “Pierre Garçon — Haiti.”

It was also funny watching these guys trying to stay serious while their teammates were trying to mess them up from behind the camera. Offensive lineman Chris Chester had several tricks up his sleeve to mess up center Will Montgomery, while both Montgomery and Chester threw paper balls at fellow offensive lineman Kory Lichtensteiger as he said his name and college.

Here’s the full, behind-the-scenes video:
