Series History: Redskins-Cowboys

The Redskins have played the Cowboys 105 times in the regular season and postseason combined. The two teams are not only NFC East rivals, but combine to create one of the best rivalries in the NFL. The squads have squared off twice a year since the Cowboys were moved to the Eastern Conference in 1961.

The Redskins, originating from the Boston Braves, have been in Washington for the duration of this rivalry. Cowboys Stadium is located in Arlington, Texas, and the team’s facilities are in Irving.

The Redskins won the first-ever matchup between the two teams, 26-14, on Oct. 9, 1960, at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. In the first four games between the franchises, the Redskins would win two and tie two games with the Cowboys, not losing until the fifth game, in 1962.

The Redskins have beaten the Cowboys twice in the playoffs, and both times in the NFC Championship game to send them to the Super Bowl.

The first playoff battle between the Redskins and Cowboys occurred on New Year’s Eve, 1972, when Washington welcomed Dallas to RFK Stadium in downtown D.C. Rolling on all cylinders, Charley Taylor caught two Billy Kilmer passes for touchdowns, and the Redskins rolled to a 26-3 victory. The Redskins would fall to the undefeated Dolphins in Super Bowl VII.

The next playoff matchup occurred on Jan. 22, 1983, when the Redskins again played host to the Cowboys at RFK Stadium. Pitting the two top-seeded NFC teams against one another, the game was close until Washington defensive end Dexter Manley tipped a pass intended for Dallas running back Tony Dorsett. The ball landed in the hands of Redskins lineman Darryl Grant, who lumbered into the end zone for the game-sealing score.

The last matchup between the two teams saw a 38-31 Redskins win on Nov. 22. Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III paced the Washington offense by completing 20-of-28 passes for 311 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. He completed touchdown passes to four different receivers – Aldrick Robinson, Pierre Garçon, Santana Moss and tight end Niles Paul. Running back Alfred Morris ran 24 times for 113 yards and a touchdown.

The defense was led by a combined eight tackles from middle linebacker Perry Riley. Cornerbacks Josh Wilson (six tackles, forced fumble) and DeAngelo Hall (three tackles, two passes defensed and an interception) also led the way and were aided by linebacker London Fletcher (interception) and defensive end Stephen Bowen and linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, each of whom had a sack.

The Cowboys lead the all-time series against the Redskins 62-41-2.

I love how stupid Dallas fans can be. This one is so stupid, he is actually surprised that the article on the REDKSINS website only cites the games where the Redskins won… how stupid do you have to be to expect REDSKINS.COM to hilight the Dallas wins? hahaha.. stupid little dallas fan…hahah..

Yall cant even beat us at home on thanksgiving, what grounds do uou have to say romo can come in thw clutch and win you guys a football game. Yall are sorry as f*** punk a** fans who wont wear their colors unless theyre winning. And gt used to the skinds taking the division. And please keep romo. He will NEVER win ANY team a superbowl and it is comical that he os thr all time best dallas qb. What a s*** franchise. Hail.to the redskins. Figures the only comment on a rrdskins article is some sorry f***** dallas fan (probably not from dallas). Rg3 for president.

You are quite the Dallas fan, Homer. How long have you lived in the Dallas area or are you one of this who became a Dallas fan when they were winning Super Bowls and your local team wasn’t?

Anyway, what makes you think that your boys will be smacking around anyone? You couldn’t do it in your own house this year and now you are coming to our house and talking trash? Your defense is porous and your offense is predictable. The perennial loser Romo will once again display his late season talent for screwing up a game.

I bet Joseph likes the Yankees too. And probably Miami Heat too. Thanks for finally getting a clue Joseph and staying off our website.

I’ll be in the parking lot after the game sunday handing out tissues to any Cowboy fans leaving the stadium. I handed them out to Giants and Ravens fans at our last home games. If you give me your address I can mail you one too. Odds are you live no where close to Dallas! Hail to the NFC East Champion 2012 Redskins!

If you email me. I send you a box for you and all your redskins fans. Also send you to grammar school along with it.

You guys beat us once and you think you have the cowboys number. If you really knew football you realize we beat you more in your stadium than we beat you in are own home stadium.

  17. By Christopher Medina on Dec 27, 2012 | Reply

For the person said we could not beat the Saints. If you look at your schedule first game of the season your redskins also got beat in regulation not overtime by the saints.

  18. By Christopher Medina on Dec 27, 2012 | Reply

Not to mention the reason we have the tie breaker because you could not be common teams. Your schedule at the end of the season was pretty easy. They set up that way. That why you finally won at the end of the season and not at the start of your season.

Even ESPN hates the Cowboys. That OK every time they pick against us they win. So I like the way it looking. There were five key offense players that were not in the thanks giving game.

I do see defense making the same mistakes twice. The defense got better every week. Even with all the injuries. I feel with offense they way they doing past four weeks. We keep RG3 limited in his role and the defense and special teams will help and pushing the Cowboys into the playoffs. Yes it will be a fourth quarter win. But a win is a win.

can someone explain to me what the NFL use to determin that if dallas beat us (skins) on sunday night, they will finish in front of us ? cause they would be 9-7 each, 1-1 again us, 4-2 in the division ?

Joseph the 1991 redskins would beat the cowboys anytime any place. Also dont sleep on the 1983 redskins that was a great team that espn never talks about. Those two teams would crush the mighty cowgirls
