Morris: ‘Waiver Wire Pickup Of The Year’

Alfred Morris has completely squashed any talks about “Shanahanigans.”

The term refers to head coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan‘s use of multiple running backs compared to a single, premier back handling most of the team’s carries in recent seasons.

Instead, Morris has been the latter in 2012. He’s turned in the best rushing campaign ever by a Redskins rookie; and, with 104 yards Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, he’ll break Clinton Portis‘ Redskins single-season record for rushing yards in a season (1,516).

That performance — combined with his 10 touchdowns — has obviously made Morris one of the most popular fantasy players in the league.

For his efforts, Morris was recently voted as the NFL Network’s “NFL Fantasy Live Waiver Wire Pickup Of The Year,” beating out Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb and Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts III.

Morris made an appearance on this show this week to talk about the award (see below), but here’s a few snippets from his conversation:

Waiver Wire NFL NetworkOn being voted the “Waiver Wire Pickup Of The Year:”

“It feels great. That’s definitely a huge honor, and I’m just thankful that I was able to help, I guess, a lot of people out on fantasy, obviously, if they picked me for the waiver wire pickup.”

On his initial thoughts after being drafted in the sixth round by the Redskins:

“My first, initial thought was ‘OK, let’s make the team. We’ve got an opportunity. Let’s make the team.’ That was always my initial thought. And then from there, I knew coach’s history — I knew what he was able to do with late-round backs, seeing things in running backs that others didn’t and they overlooked it, and they’re just making fine specimens of those guys. So I was definitely just all in and I was like, ‘I’m just going to listen to coach and I know he’s going to make me an all-around better player.'”

On being compared to former Denver Broncos great running back Terrell Davis:

“I think I hear that comparison more than any other comparison, is the Terrell Davis one. It’s an honor just to be mentioned in the same line as Terrell Davis. He’s such a great back. I grew up watching him; I grew up watching the Broncos and the Green Bay Packers, so, I mean, just to be mentioned with him is an honor in itself.”

On why fantasy football owners should pick him in the first round next season:

“Consistency. I’ve been consistent all year, and if I’m blessed enough to be here next year with this crazy business called the NFL, I’m going to be consistent for you next year, as well. I give it all I’ve got each and every day, not just on game day. If you pick me up in the first round, I’ll be consistent for you.”

Others have noticed this also: Alfred reminds me of Larry Brown. There can be no higher praise than that. Larry was on a show recently and Alfred called in. They talked about others making the same comparison. Alfred will have his own fine career, but for anyone ever to be compared to Larry? Phenomenal !!!!
