Shanahan: Taunting The Football Is OK

Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garçon has taken to spinning the football on the ground after several catches this season.

It’s an act that teammate Santana Moss made famous years ago, but head coach Mike Shanahan recently praised this specific display of excitement after a big play or a first down that, when done correctly, in no way should be looked at as taunting the opposing team.

But the officials in last Sunday’s Redskins-Browns game apparently took exception to Garçon spinning the football on the ground after the catch and pointing at it, and flagged him for taunting — a 15-yard penalty.

Shanahan was asked today by the media if Garçon was guilty of taunting.

The NFL announced today that Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III led all league rookies and finished sixth overall in 2013 Pro Bowl fan voting.

Griffin III — who had 683,943 fan votes — only finished behind the Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers (777,827 votes) at the quarterback position in the NFC.

Fan voting — which ended Monday — is only one-third of the process of determining the AFC and NFC Pro Bowl teams. The league’s coaches and players cast their votes today and tomorrow, and the announcement of the 2013 Pro Bowl teams, including starters, will be made Wednesday, Dec. 26, in prime time (7 p.m. ET) on NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access Pro Bowl Selection Show.”

When asked yesterday about his league-wide popularity — ESPN.com’s Darren Rovell reported earlier this week that Griffin III had the top-selling NFL jersey ever in a single season — the quarterback said it’s “a tribute to the fans.”

Alexander, Fletcher Win Community Award

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 20, 2012 – 11:56 am

Alexander-Fletcher Community

Washington Redskins linebackers Lorenzo Alexander and London Fletcher today were announced as the NFL Players Association’s annual PULSE Award winners for outstanding work in the community.

Alexander and Fletcher were voted by their teammates during annual NFLPA locker room meetings and received monetary donations for their foundations or a charity of their choice, according to the NFLPA.

Alexander and Fletcher will also be eligible to submit applications for the Byron “Whizzer” White Award, the highest honor the NFLPA can bestow on a player. The award was established by the professional football players of America to “acknowledge a debt of gratitude to one of their own, Supreme Court Justice Byron Raymond “Whizzer” White—scholar, athlete, patriot, humanitarian and public servant.” The NFLPA presents this prestigious annual award “to the player that is just as dedicated off the field as he is on the field.”

Both Alexander and Fletcher are very deserving recipients of this year’s NFLPA Pulse Awards.

The Redskins have played the Eagles on 155 occasions in the regular season and postseason combined, beginning in 1934. The two teams have played each other twice every year since 1936. Washington has swept the season series 23 times, while Philadelphia has swept it 17 times.

The Redskins, originating from the Boston Braves, won both games in Boston before locating to Washington, D.C., in 1937. The Eagles, originating in Philadelphia in 1933, have always played in the City of Brotherly Love.

Both the Eagles’ Lincoln Financial Field and NocaCare Training Complex are located in Philadelphia.

VIDEO: Weeden Mic’d Up Vs. Redskins

The Cleveland Browns have had a very opportunistic defense this season. In one game, they forced eight turnovers against the Pittsburgh Steelers, while in another, they got seven sacks against the Dallas Cowboys.

Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden found out that the Washington Redskins’ defense also likes to take advantage of its own opportunities to make a play.

Weeden was mic’d up for NFL Films for last Sunday’s game against the Redskins at Cleveland Browns Stadium — a 38-21 Washington win — and it’s a perfect representation of the ups and downs that can occur for an NFL quarterback throughout a game.

The entire mic’d up video is below, but here’s a few highlights from a Redskins perspective:
