Romanowski: Fletcher Deserves Record

For 16 seasons, Bill Romanowski built a reputation as one of the nastiest, most consistent linebackers in the National Football League.

Romanowski built a streak of 243 consecutive games played from 1994 through 2003 as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders — a league record for linebackers.

For 15 seasons, London Fletcher has also built a reputation as one of the most well-respected and consistent linebackers in the NFL.

Heading into Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Fletcher has built his own streak of 238 consecutive games as a member of the St. Louis Rams, Buffalo Bills and the Redskins.

If Fletcher can play five more games, he’ll tie Romanowski’s record; six and he breaks it. And, because of the way Fletcher carries himself on the field, Romanowski is OK with that.

“Yes, I heard about the streak the last couple weeks, and I was like, ‘Wow, I think he may beat my streak,” Romanowski recently told CSN. “And you know what? Hey, streaks are meant to be broken. Records are meant to be broken. And it couldn’t happen to a better guy than London Fletcher, who has played the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”

That’s some high praise right there.

Other than durability, Romanowski and Fletcher have something else in common: they’ve both played under head coach Mike Shanahan.

This season, Fletcher has been playing through a very painful ankle injury. Earlier this month, Shanahan talked about Fletcher’s mindset as he plays through pain:

“He’s one of the few guys who I’ve seen play, especially over the last couple of weeks, that I didn’t really think could play and played. He’s got the ability to play at a high level. With all of his experience, he’s able to feed off of that. If he’s able to go, he’s going to play at that high level, because that’s his mindset.”

Here’s video (courtesy of CSN) of Romanowski discussing the consecutive games played record, and his thoughts on Fletcher:

Another reason for the Redskins to make the Playoffs and head to the BIG Game on Super Sunday. The TEAM can help London get his record by continuing to play into the post season.

    I am confident they will!

Congrats to London Fletcher from a New York Redskins Fan!

London I am so proud of you and the rest of the team. Never have I been so proud to be fan of this team. You guys give me the heart I need to deal with my medical problem (kidney failure and dialysis) and life in general. I’m not able to come to the one game (Dallas game) anymore but I never miss a game on TV. I love you guys. I am 57 yrs. old and I’ve been a Redskins fan for 41, and I’ll be Redskins fan forever.

The Skins need to build up their DL and Secondary in the draft. They also need to get RGIII some weapons. Something like the following…

    1. Jesse Williams (Alabama – DT)

    2. Xavier Rhodes (Florida State – CB)

    3. Stedman Bailey (West Virginia – WR)

How could Bill play 243 games in 9 years when at 14 years Fletch has 238? Doesn’t make sense there must be a typo, how could Bill Romanowski play 243 games from 1994 to 2003 when at 16 games a year for 9 years the math comes to something WAY short of 243, even if he played 20 games a year, that still does not add up to 243 over 9 years.

    Timmeh,

Romanowski started in 1988 with the 49’ers and ended his career in Oakland in 2003 and probably played in the postseason just about every year, including 4 SB rings.
