Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has taken the NFL by storm in this, his rookie season.
But now we have a gauge on exactly how popular he is.
ESPN.com Sports Business Reporter Darren Rovell reported today that Griffin III’s No. 10 Redskins jersey has sold more than any other NFL player’s jersey in a single season since six seasons ago, when the league began keeping track of jersey sales. Even more, there’s 3 1/2 months left in the NFL fiscal year, which runs from April 1 to March 31.
Rovell reported that the league hasn’t released any official numbers, but they did say that Griffin III overtook two-time jersey-selling champion Brett Favre, whose No. 4 jersey was the most popular both in 2008 (New York Jets) and 2009 (Minnesota Vikings).
Fanatics.com told Rovell that Redskins merchandise overall is up 252 percent for the month of December compared to last December. There’s two obvious reasons for that: No. 10 and winning. The Redskins — co-leaders of the NFC East — have won five straight games, and a lot of that can be attributed to the play of Griffin III, both a Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player award candidate.
