#WASvsCLE: Fourth Quarter Conclusions

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 16, 2012 – 4:09 pm

There’s an understandable amount of concern when your starting quarterback goes down with an injury and is replaced by a rookie making his first career start.

But the Washington Redskins’ coaching staff made the transition as smooth as possible for Kirk Cousins and the Redskins’ offense, which was trying to keep the momentum of a four-game winning streak going without Robert Griffin III, who’s nursing a sprained LCL in his right knee.

After getting off to a rocky start with an interception that led to a Cleveland touchdown, Cousins settled down and admirably led the Washington offense as if he had been doing it the entire season. The Redskins’ defense was also there to make some key stops, and Washington extended its winning streak to five games with a 38-21 win over the Browns at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

The win — coupled with a blowout loss by the New York Giants today at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons — moves Washington (8-6) into a tie for first place in the NFC East with the Giants and further confirms their hopes for a playoff spot.

Here’s some key plays from the fourth quarter:

CONTINUING REDSKINS DRIVE:

1st and 10 >44: Cousins finds Pierre Garcon for 15 yards and the first down.
1st and 10 >29: Alfred Morris runs his way for five yards.
3rd and 2 >21: The Redskins convert another third down to Garcon, this time on a six-yard completion.
1st and 10 >15: Cousins takes off to his left and scrambles for six before getting out of bounds.
2nd and 4 >9: Morris gets another five yards and a first down.
1st and Goal >4: Evan Royster gets a four-yard touchdown run, his second touchdown of the season.
Extra point: Forbath’s kick is good.

11:19: Redskins 31, Browns 14
Drive summary: 10 plays, 67 yards, 4:42

Kickoff: Returned 29 yards by Cribbs to the Cleveland 28-yard line.

ENSUING BROWNS’ DRIVE:

1st and 10 <28: Mohamed Massaquoi gets seven yards on a catch from Weeden.
2nd and 3 <35: Weeden is sacked by Rob Jackson and fumbles, but the quarterback gets the ball back.
3rd and 7 <31: Weeden finds Benjamin wide open over the top for a 69-yard touchdown.
Extra point: Dawson’s kick is good.

11:19: Redskins 31, Browns 21
Drive summary: Three plays, 72 yards, 1:08

Kickoff: Returned by Royster to the 24-yard line.

ENSUING REDSKINS’ DRIVE:

1st and 10 <24: Cousins finds Joshua Morgan wide open across the middle for a 32 yard pass-and-catch.
3rd and 4 >38: Tight end Logan Paulsen gets a 10-yard catch from Cousins to earn the first down.
1st and 10 >28: Morris runs for three yards.
2nd and 12 >30: (After false start) Cousins finds Santana Moss, who fumbles, which is recovered by Garcon at the eight-yard line.
1st and Goal >8: Alfred Morris runs it into the end zone from eight-yard touchdown run, breaking the Redskins’ rookie record for rushing touchdowns (nine).
Extra point: Forbath’s kick is good.

5:05: Redskins 37, Browns 21
Drive summary: Eight plays, 76 yards, 5:11

Kickoff: Returned by Cribbs to the Cleveland 31-yard line.

ENSUING BROWNS’ DRIVE:

1st and 10 >31: Weeden’s pass intended for Joshua Gordon is dropped.
2nd and 10 >31: Richardson gets nine yards on a pass play.
3rd and 1 >40: Barry Cofield gets a sack on Weeden and does his famous Taser dance. Bzzzzzz.
4th and 8 >33: Weeden’s pass is incomplete. Turnover on downs.

ENSUING REDSKINS’ DRIVE:

Redskins run out the clock by running the ball. On 4th and 1 from the Cleveland 5-yard line, fullback Darrel Young got two yards to convert the first down.

Cousins took a knee to win it from there.

It’s really nice to have a good relative when your starting QB gets hurt. I’m glad we’ve got a great Cousin(s). Bad, really bad.

It was great to see so many smiles on the sidelines yesterday and it felt darn good to have 5 wins in a row! Great things are happening for the TEAM as there are no “I’s” on this squad!

    Congrats to All!

    Hailing from UpState New York!
