Gabriella Miller is having the fight of her young life.
In November, Gabriella — a local fourth grader — was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Since that time, the brave girl has underwent almost-daily rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
Gabriella and her family understandably could’ve taken a “Why us?” approach to the diagnosis. Instead, the 9 year old remains focused on giving to others.
After recently seeing an ad for a Macy’s drive that promises $1 (up to $1 million) to Make-A-Wish for each letter to Santa the store receives, Gabriella decided to help out with her own letter-writing campaign.
Her original goal was to collect 10,000 letters — or to help Make-A-Wish receive $10,000 from Macy’s. But after the family received an outpouring of nationwide support, the goal has been increased to 50,000 letters to Santa for Macy’s. She plans on personally delivering all of the letters on Dec. 23.
Several Washington Redskins players contributed to the letter-writing campaign on Tuesday at the annual Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation’s “Covered For The Holidays” event at the Macy’s Metro Center in downtown Washington, D.C. Tight ends Fred Davis and Logan Paulsen and running back Alfred Morris each wrote letters to Santa before placing them in the delivery box set for the North Pole.
Make-A-Wish is working with Gabriella to determine her true, heartfelt wish, although Gabriella has indicated she is interested in traveling to Paris with her family early next year – when her chemotherapy and radiation treatments are expected to end.
Last Sunday, Gabriella added another thrilling experience to her list. She was the WRCF‘s “Kickoff Kid” for the Washington Redskins-Baltimore Ravens game at FedExField, and was tasked with running onto the field and grabbing the kicking tee after the opening kickoff. She executed the job to perfection, and the Redskins would go on to win, 31-28, in an overtime thriller against their counterparts to the northeast.
It’s been a whirlwind last few weeks for Gabriella, but she continues her goal of giving back to others in need. According to the Washington Post, other than her Macy’s letters to Santa campaign, Gabriella is currently working on her second donation to “Locks of Love,” a nonprofit group that provides hairpieces and wigs to children facing medical hair loss. She has also volunteered at a local food bank.
What an inspirational story, and what a terrific young lady.
