The Redskins are on a roll.
On the field, the team has built a four-game winning streak and remains in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Off the field, its players keep getting national recognition for their tremendous performances.
The NFL announced today that rookies Alfred Morris and Kirk Cousins each won separate weekly league awards, as Morris, a running back, was named NFL Rookie of the Week, while Cousins, a quarterback, won the “Never Say Die” moment of the week.
The Rookie of the Week award for Morris is his second of the season, and represents the fourth straight week and eighth week overall a Redskins player has taken it home. Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III had won Rookie of the Week the three previous weeks to increase his total to six on the season.
The win for Morris is somewhat of an upset, considering New York Giants running back David Wilson had a monster performance over the New Orleans Saints, collecting a team-record 327 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns — one of which was a 97-yard kickoff return.
Morris, however, has been much more consistent throughout the season. The NFL’s third-leading rusher — and the Redskins record holder for rushing yards by a rookie — rushed for 122 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown in Washington’s 31-28 overtime victory over the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday at FedExField.
Cousins’ victory, meanwhile, is a little less surprising. He entered last Sunday’s game late in the fourth quarter to relieve Griffin III — who had injured his knee — and, with his team down 28-20, threw a touchdown pass to Pierre Garçon before running in the game-tying two-point conversion himself to send the game into overtime. In that period, kicker Kai Forbath — also a first-year player for the Redskins — nailed the game-winning kick.
If nothing else, these awards prove that the future is bright in Washington. The future is also now, and with these youngsters running the show, the rest of the league is taking notice.
