Two Redskins In ‘Rookie Watch’ Top 5

It’s time for our periodic check-in to ESPN.com Matt Williamson’s “Rookie Watch” column.

Why now? Well, two Redskins rookies are in Williamson’s top five. By my math — which could be very well be wrong — Washington players account for 40 percent of the top five and 20 percent of the list overall.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III (No. 2) and running back Alfred Morris (No. 5) have been mainstays in the top 10 all season — and Griffin III has even been No. 1 at times — but having both in the top 5 is certainly something of which Redskins fans can be very proud.

You can read the entire piece by clicking here, but you must have ESPN Insider access to get the whole thing. So for those only interested in what Williamson had to write about the Redskins on the list, here you go:

No. 2 – Robert Griffin III, QB:

“The Redskins’ franchise quarterback injured his knee late in regulation of a game that saw Washington beat the Ravens in overtime. He is considered day-to-day, which has to be considered great news for the Skins. When we do see him next, Griffin’s mobility might not be the same, but he brings much more than just his legs to the table. As I discussed in my latest Scouts Buzz, Washington is right in the thick of the NFC playoff race.”

No. 5 – Alfred Morris, HB:

“Only Peterson, Lynch and Martin have more rushing yards than Morris. Fumbling has really become an issue for Morris, who struggled with ball security in college, but by no means is he slowing down as the season wears on. Now even more might be needed from the Skins’ workhorse back with Griffin’s injury looming.”

Griffin III and Morris are also the only NFC East representatives in the top 10 of this week’s “Rookie Watch,” though New York Giants running back David Wilson is listed as an “other notable.”

The Cleveland Browns, Washington’s opponent on Sunday, have one player — running back Trent Richardson (No. 7) — in the top 10 and another — wide receiver Josh Gordon — in the “other notables.”

By the way, speaking of Redskins rookies, you can vote for Morris for the NFL’s Rookie of the Week by clicking here. You can also vote for rookie quarterback Kirk Cousins‘ spirited play in the final minutes of last Sunday’s win over the Baltimore Ravens as the NFL’s Never Say Die Moment of the Week by clicking here.
