12/12/37: Redskins’ First NFL Title

Seventy-five years ago today, the Washington Redskins began a tradition of winning that few NFL teams can currently match.

On Dec. 12, 1937, the Redskins defeated the Chicago Bears, 28-21, at Wrigley Field to win their first-ever NFL championship. Chicago led 14-7 at halftime before Washington, led by quarterback Sammy Baugh, stormed back in the second half. A 35-yard touchdown pass from Baugh to wingback Ed Justice broke a 21-21 tie in the fourth quarter and gave the Redskins the title.

Baugh — a rookie at the time — led the way by completing 18-of-33 passes for 335 yards and three touchdowns. The game’s first touchdown was scored on a seven-yard reverse play to halfback Cliff Battles.

Washington would go on to win four more NFL championships — one in the pre-Super Bowl era (1942) and three Super Bowls (XVII in 1982, XXII in 1987 and XXVI in 1991).
