Billick, Green Throw Praise At Shanahan

Dennis Green and Brian Billick have coached a combined 363 regular-season games in the National Football League, so having their respect is certainly something not taken lightly.

Green and Billick — currently analysts with the NFL Network — on Monday decided to throw some of that respect towards Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan during their segment, “The Coaches Show.”

The two former coaches were impressed with Shanahan’s playcalling on the two-point conversion in the final seconds of Sunday’s Redskins-Ravens game. After getting within two on a touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to Pierre Garçon, the Redskins dialed up a surprising quarterback draw, which got Cousins into the end zone and tied the game.

The Redskins would go on to hold off the Ravens’ offense in overtime and then get a game-winning field goal from kicker Kai Forbath to win 31-28.

The video of Green and Billick is below, but here’s some snippets from their comments:

“But I think the key was also the two-point play, when they had the ability to run the exact same play that they would’ve run if [Robert Griffin III] was there, which is that, ‘Hey, we’ve got to run the quarterback draw; we’ve got to spread out,” Green said. “There’s nobody in the middle. It should be there.’ So, I thought it was great on their part.”

Billick guessed what the conversations were like on the field just before that two-point conversion attempt:

“I would’ve loved to have heard the conversation on both sidelines over that two-point play,” Billick said. “My guess is — and it’s surely a guess — is that [Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees is] probably saying, ‘Wait a minute, the defense we have accounts for a quarterback draw, but they don’t have RG3 in there. They’ve got Kirk Cousins. Let’s do something else.’ And I can just hear Kyle Shanahan talking to Mike Shanahan going, ‘Look — they’re never going to expect the quarterback draw. They’re probably prepared for that with RG3. The last thing they’re going to expect is a quarterback draw by Kirk Cousins.’ I thought it was a brilliant play call.”

Here’s the entire segment about Shanahan and the Redskins on the NFL Network’s “The Coaches Show:”
