After struggling the first two quarters, the Washington Redskins’ defense came alive in the third quarter of today’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Redskins got two field goals off of a Rob Jackson forced fumble and recovery and a London Fletcher interception, and, heading into the fourth quarter, the Redskins trail the Ravens, 21-20.
Here’s some key plays from each drive in the third quarter:
Ravens receive opening kickoff; first drive of second half:
1st and 10 <14: Running back Ray Rice runs for nine yards.
2nd and 1 <23: Rice again with the carry; his two yards is enough for the first down.
1st and 10 <25: Rice, again, for a gain of six yards.
2nd and 4 <31: Joe Flacco’s pass incomplete, intended for Torrey Smith; cornerback DeAngelo Hall flagged for a personal foul for high contact on a defenseless receiver.
1st and 10 <45: Outside linebacker Rob Jackson strip sacks Flacco; ball recovered by Jackson at the Baltimore 46-yard line.
Redskins’ ensuing drive:
1st and 10 <46: Running back Alfred Morris runs for no gain.
2nd and 10 <46: Morris spins his way out of tackles and gains 10 yards for a first down.
2nd and 10 <36: After an incomplete pass from Robert Griffin III to Pierre Garcon, Morris gets a six-yard run.
3rd and 4 <32: Griffin III’s pass incomplete to wide receiver Joshua Morgan.
Field goal attempt: 48-yard attempt by kicker Kai Fotbath is good.
Ravens 21, Redskins 17; Scoring drive: 6 plays, 16 yards, 2:24
Ravens’ ensuing drive:
Kickoff: returned to the Baltimore 35-yard line.
1st and 10 <35: Running back Bernard Pierce gets free to his left and gains 11 yards to the Baltimore 46-yard line
1st and 10 <46: Pierce again with the carry; this time for seven yards
2nd and 3 >47: Pierce is on a roll — 21 yards on this carry to the Washington 26-yard line.
1st and 10 >26: Rice gets in on the action and picks up eight yards on a run.
2nd and 2 >18: Rice picks up one yard on the ground
3rd and 1 >17: Flacco runs two yards to pick up the first down
1st and 10 >15: Rice gashes up the middle for another six-yard gain
2nd and 4 >9: Rice is stuffed for a loss of two yards
3rd and 6 >11: Ryan Kerrigan blasts Flacco as he’s throwing and the batted pass is intercepted by London Fletcher.
Redskins’ ensuing drive:
1st and 10 >15: Griffin III connects with Leonard Hankerson for a 17-yard gain across the middle.
1st and 10 >32: Morris runs for 17 yards to the Washington 49-yard line. He now has 16 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown.
1st and 10 >49: Griffin III takes off with the ball to his right and gains four yards.
2nd and 6 <47: Morris rumbles some more, this time for a eight-yard gain and the first down.
3rd and 7 <36: Griffin III scrambles for a five-yard run.
4th and 2 <31: Forbath’s 49-yard field-goal attempt is good.
Ravens 21, Redskins 20; Scoring drive: 8 plays, 54 yards, 4:14
Ravens’ ensuing drive
Kickoff: Goes out of bounds, ball placed at the Baltimore 40-yard line.
1st and 10 <40: Flacco finds Leach for a 3-yard pass and catch.
2nd and 7 <43: Rice is stuffed for a 1-yard gain, setting up a 3rd and 6 when the fourth quarter begins.
