It was a game the Washington Redskins had to win to strengthen their playoff hopes.

The NFC East-leading New York Giants stood in the Redskins’ way in a nationally-televised game on Monday Night Football.

And in the end, the Redskins prevailed.

Washington won its third straight game tonight, defeating the Giants (7-5), 17-16, to get to .500 on the season at 6-6 and improve their hopes for a playoff spot.

#NYGvsWAS: Third Quarter Thoughts

This key divisional matchup has 15 minutes left, and it’s far from over.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Redskins trail the Giants, 16-10 — and they’re driving with the ball into New York territory.

The Giants began the first drive of the half at their own 10-yard line after a holding call on the kickoff return. Three plays later, they faced a 3rd and 10 when quarterback Eli Manning found wide receiver Victor Cruz wide open for 12 yards across the middle. The conversion made the Giants 9-of-11 on third downs in the game.

But the Giants were finally forced to punt five plays later, as returner Brandon Banks took the 52-yardkick to the Washington 13-yard line.

#NYGvsWAS: Halftime Summations

The New York Giants began the second quarter of tonight’s Monday Night Football matchup against the Washington Redskins with the ball on the Washington 20-yard line.

But three plays later, after an intentional grounding call on quarterback Eli Manning and three solid plays by the Redskins’ defense, the Giants had to send out Lawrence Tynes to attempt a 43-yard field goal. Tynes — who is usually money against the Redskins — missed the kick, however, sending the packed FedExField crowd into a craze.

But Tynes got the last laugh, converting a 40-yard field goal at the end of the half. After another hard-fought quarter, the Giants lead the Redskins, 13-10.

Well, Redskins fans, this is is. Your team is in the playoff hunt going into December.

Tonight’s Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants is perhaps the most important football game at FedExField in five years, the last time Washington made the playoffs.

And, at the end of the first quarter, the Redskins (5-6) lead the NFC East-leading Giants (7-4), 7-3.

The Redskins won the opening toss and elected to receive, starting off the game with the ball at their own 20-yard line.

FedExField is the place to be tonight.

The Redskins take on the Giants in their Monday Night Football battle, and several notable people are in attendance, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Montell Jordan, C.C. Sabathia, members of the D.C. United soccer team, Kevin Durant, and others.

But someone else very special is also here to take in the game: former Redskins’ head coach and legend Joe Gibbs.

Gibbs got a warm welcome as he walked through the tunnel and onto the FedExField grass:

Behind The Scenes: RG3’s MNF Segment

Posted by Andrew Walker on December 3, 2012 – 8:00 pm

It’s pretty obvious that the national spotlight — at least in the sports world — has been focused here the past few days on Washington, D.C.

Case in point: the ESPN Monday Night Football crew has been in town doing all sorts of projects with the Redskins for tonight’s game between the Redskins and the New York Giants at FedExField.

ESPN, of course, has wanted access to Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III for a variety of spots, including a segment for tonight’s game that will air right before the game. The Redskins Blog, of course, was there getting footage, as well.

(Griffin III also shot a spot for Monday Night Countdown with former NFL coach and current ESPN analyst Jon Gruden.)

There’s two points to this particular segment, according to the crew: one, Griffin III is an announcer calling his own plays from late in the fourth quarter of the Redskins’ first game against the Giants, including his mad dash and first-down conversion to Logan Paulsen and his eventual touchdown pass to Santana Moss to give his team the lead. Secondly, Griffin III talks about what was going through his own head during those plays, and how he’s looking forward for revenge tonight (which was all scripted by ESPN).

The crew said they were also going to film Giants quarterback Eli Manning doing something similar, so I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished product. It was a very interesting process, especially considering how many times Griffin III had to repeat such simple lines for the sake of a quality production.

Anyways, here’s the exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage of Griffin III filming the segment for ESPN’s Monday Night Football:
