The Redskins today welcomed back a familiar face, as they signed linebacker Bryan Kehl to their 53-man roster.
Kehl, 28, is in his sixth year in the league, and played in three games with the Kansas City Chiefs this season. He played the previous two regular seasons with the St. Louis Rams after beginning his career with the New York Giants.
In a corresponding move, the Redskins waived outside linebacker Mario Addison from their active roster. Addison, who signed with the team Oct. 9, plauyed in five games with Washington.
Kehl — who is wearing his familiar No. 53 with Washington — originally signed with the Redskins in April and had a strong showing in training camp and the preseason before he was released amidst a crowded group of linebackers during final cuts.
Kehl’s best preseason game in burgundy and gold was his final one, in the Redskins’ 30-3 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He had a team-high-tying six tackles, one sack, three quarterback hits, a pass deflection and an interception that he took from the Washington six-yard line to its 49-yard line.
Through the four Redskins preseason games, Kehl totaled a team-best 17 tackles and had two sacks, three pass deflections and that interception. And even though he faced the possibility of not making the original 53-man roster later that week, Kehl had a great perspective about the whole ordeal.
“We’ve got some players here,” Kehl told me after the Buccaneers preseason game. “I think the coaches are going to have a tough time [during roster cuts] — I don’t know what they’re going to do, but we’ve got a football team, and whoever doesn’t make it here, they’re going to make it elsewhere.”
Kehl said the fact that so many players were performing well in the preseason meant that the depth on the Redskins’ roster was for real.
“[Head coach Mike] Shanahan knows — he’s been around championship football teams — and he says we’ve got competition at every position,” Kehl said. “And what that means is if somebody goes down, then the next guy’s ready to step right up. And that’s what it takes in this league. It’s a long season, guys get banged up, and we’ve got some good football players. I really think the Redskins are going to do well.”
Kehl, you might remember, also became a father for the first time during training camp this year. His wife, Jessica, gave birth to their daughter, Jayda, after going into labor for 22 whole hours.
Anyway, here’s a video of CSN’s Rob Carlin talking with Kehl after his dominant preseason performance this year against the Buccaneers:
