Series History: Redskins-Giants

The Redskins have played the Giants on 161 occasions in the regular season and the postseason combined, beginning in 1932. The Redskins and Giants have faced each other in the regular season 159 times, making them each team’s most common opponent.

The Giants have played in New York since their inaugural season in 1925. The Giants’ MetLife Stadium is located about a mile from the team’s practice facility and headquarters.

The Redskins won the first-ever matchup between the two teams, 14-6, on Oct. 9, 1932, when the Redskins were playing as the Boston Braves. In their first matchup with the Redskins playing in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 16, 1937, the Redskins won 13-3 at Griffith Stadium. Later that season, the Redskins defeated the Giants 49-14 at the Polo Grounds to earn a trip to the NFL Championship game against the Chicago Bears, which the Redskins won.

The Redskins and the Giants tied, 7-7, in their first-ever matchup at FedExField on Nov. 23, 1997. The Redskins’ lone score game in the second quarter on a 1-yard rush by quarterback Gus Frerotte. The Giants, meanwhile, scored on a four-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter from quarterback Danny Kanell to Chris Calloway.

Washington kicker Scott Blanton missed a 54-yard, game-winning attempt and also missed a 45-yard, go-ahead try in the fourth quarter. The defense was led by linebacker Ken Harvey’s four sacks.

The last matchup between the teams saw a 27-23 Redskins loss in Week 7 at MetLife Stadium. The Redskins had taken a 23-20 lead late in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass from quarterback Robert Griffin III to wide receiver Santana Moss before the Giants’ responded with a game-winning, 77-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning to Victor Cruz.

Griffin III paced the Redskins’ offense by completing 20-of-28 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 89 yards. Running back Alfred Morris also ran for a career-best 120 yards. The defense was led by safety Madieu Williams’ six tackles, while outside linebacker Rob Jackson had an interception and a half-sack.

The Redskins are 64-93-4 all-time in combined regular-season and postseason games against the Giants.

httr, u need to win this monday night. this is your last shot to make it in the playoffs this year. if we win we have a very good chance. if we lose we basically have no chance.
