Join USAA, Redskins In ‘Salute to Service’

Posted by Andrew Walker on November 14, 2012 – 9:32 am

The Washington Redskins and USAA will be honoring current and former military members and their families as part of the “Salute to Service” campaign.

The Redskins on Sunday will display “Salute to Service” banners on the sidelines honoring all branches of the United States armed forces, in addition to honoring members of the military on the field as well as on the video boards during their game against the Philadelphia Eagles at FedExField.

The Redskins also adopted a local unit — from the Air Force District of Washington at Joint Base Andrews — which visited the team’s practice on Monday and will attend Sunday’s game as guests of USAA. The Redskins will also wear helmet decals honoring military branches with their insignia. Look for more information on “Salute to Service” activities at www.redskins.com/salute.

The Redskins-Eagles game will also be featuring other USAA activities, including:

- National Anthem Wristbands: USAA and the Redskins will hand out team-branded wristbands at the Nov. 18 game vs. the Philadelphia Eagles and are encouraging fans to wear the band on their right wrists. The purpose of the band is to serve as a reminder to place your right hand over your heart during the national anthem to properly honor our nation’s flag and current and former military as stated in Title 36: Section 301 of the United States Flag Code.

- “Military Challenge Coin” Coin Toss: Use of military challenge coins has long been a source of pride for military personnel to identify themselves as a member of a particular unit. Paying homage to that revered tradition, USAA and the NFL designed a special “challenge” coin for the official coin tosses in 16 NFL games beginning Nov. 1. Gen. Larry Spencer, vice chief of staff of the Air Force, will be in attendance and serve as one of the game’s honorary captains.

- Million Fan Salute: NFL fans are invited to visit www.millionfansalute.com to create a digital salute in honor of the U.S. military and on behalf of their favorite NFL team through Nov. 26. The three markets with the most salutes will earn rewards from USAA for their local military community.

About Salute to Service
The NFL is continuing its long history of honoring veterans and active duty members of the military through its annual Salute to Service campaign. All 32 NFL member clubs have designated a home game in November to honor the military community. This effort will unify and elevate the already extensive military appreciation effort being made by the NFL. Ideated by USAA, a new initiative will enable NFL teams to deepen their connection to the military community by identifying local military units from each branch of service to honor on game day. Teams will wear helmet decals honoring military branches with their insignia, and the stories of connection between clubs and local units will be highlighted throughout the Salute to Service campaign in broadcast and online. For every point scored during the NFL’s 32 Salute to Service games, the league will donate to its designated military charities.  In addition, the league will use its digi-camo ribbon shield to enhance in-stadium and broadcast elements throughout all Salute to Service games.
