To be obvious, high expectations come with being the No. 4 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
After two-and-a-half seasons, Trent Williams is meeting those expectations.
The left tackle was recently ranked by Pro Football Focus as one of the best players in the league this season in their “2012 Top 51″ list.
So where did Williams rank, exactly?
He fell at No. 28 overall — third among NFL left tackles, and is the only Redskins player on the list.
For those of you unfamiliar with Pro Football Focus, it is a wonderful (and sometimes very telling) website that goes way beyond the average football statistics and offers up its own advanced ways of evaluating each player in the NFL.
For example: Kahled Elsayed, who built the PFF 2012 Top 51 list, said Williams ranks fourth among all left tackles this season with a 97.2 pass blocking efficiency.
That kind of production is critical for any left tackle, whose job is to protect his quarterback’s blind side. It’s even more important for Williams, however, considering he’s protecting Robert Griffin III — the No. 2 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft who has been a leading candidate this season for Rookie of the Year.
And Williams continues to do it week after week, regardless of how the rest of the team is playing. He received a high grade by Pro Football Focus for his performance against the Panthers. They wrote:
“Another fine day for Williams, who continues to emerge as one of the league’s best left tackles. He was perfect in pass protection against and contributed in the run game as well.”
In my mind, Williams — without a doubt — should be going to the Pro Bowl this season. Pro Football Focus agrees with that assertion, as well. On their “Pro Bowl Cheat Sheet” for the NFC, they have Williams among three offensive tackles (San Francisco’s Anthony Davis and Joe Staley the other two) tabbed to go to Hawaii.
So, while there might be more “big-name” left tackles in the game, it’s hard to argue that Trent Williams is among the best — if not the best up-and-coming player at that position in the NFL.
