The Redskins were eyeing a 4-4 record when they trailed the Lions by 21 points in the third quarter at the Silverdome on Nov. 4, 1990.

But Jeff Rutledge, a journeyman  quarterback, replaced Stan Humphries and played the game of his life.

He completed his first eight passes as part of a 30-of-42, 363-yard, one touchdown performance. He also ran for a score.

His 40-yard pass to Art Monk in overtime sparked a drive climaxed by Chip Lohmiller’s field goal that gave the Redskins a 41-38 win.

Rutledge was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. The Skins tallied a team-record 674 yards, and their comeback from a 21-point deficit tied a team mark.

Went to this game with my father. What a fantastic game it was. The Posse in all their glory. And a little used QB having the day of his life. Barry Sanders had a 10 yard per carry average but for some reason only ran 10 times. Thank God.

I had given up on the game and had gone flying for the afternoon. I had an instrument on my plane called and ADF, which amounts to an AM radio. I picked up the game on a radio station and was really surprised at the comeback that day.
