Series History: Redskins-Panthers

The Redskins have played the Panthers on 10 occasions in the regular season and the postseason combined, beginning in 1995. Washington on Sunday is looking to snap a two-game losing streak to Carolina.

The Panthers have played in Carolina since their inaugural season as an NFL expansion team in 1995. The Panthers’ Bank of America Stadium is also home to their practice facilities and headquarters.

The Redskins won the first-ever matchup between the two teams, 20-17, on Dec. 24, 1995, at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. In that game, the two teams were knotted at 10-10 going into halftime before the Redskins scored a third-quarter touchdown on a Terry Allen 1-yard run and added a Eddie Murray 32-yard field goal to seal the win. The Redskins had 151 rushing yards on the day, led by Allen’s 92.

The Redskins won the first-ever matchup against the Panthers at FedExField, 38-36, on Oct. 3, 1999. In that game, the Panthers took a 36-35 lead late in the fourth quarter before Redskins kicker Brett Conway hit a game-winning, 31-yard field goal. Redskins quarterback Brad Johnson had a huge day, completing 20-of-33 passes for 337 yards and four touchdowns, while running back Stephen Davis rushed 21 times for 72 yards and a touchdown.

The Washington defense gave up 483 total yards that day, including 334 passing yards from Panthers quarterback Steve Beuerlein, 151 yards receiving by receiver Muhsin Muhammad and 142 rushing yards and three touchdowns to running back Tim Biakabutuka.

Sunday’s game will be the Panthers’ first visit to FedExField since the 2006 season. That game will be followed by the Redskins’ bye week, which will be the team’s latest since 2008 (Week 10).

The last matchup between the two teams saw a 33-20 Panthers win in Charlotte, N.C. The Redskins never led in the game, and were outscored 24-14 in the second half as the Panthers pulled away. Washington quarterback John Beck completed 22-of-37 passes for 279 yards, one touchdown and one interception and also had a rushing touchdown, while running back Tim Hightower ran 17 times for 88 yards.

The defense was led by safety Reed Doughty and linebacker London Fletcher’s nine tackles apiece, while defensive end Adam Carriker had 1.5 of the team’s four sacks on Carolina quarterback Cam Newton. The Panthers had a balanced offensive attack, with 232 Newton passing yards and 175 yards rushing, and also took advantage of three Redskins turnovers.

The Redskins are 7-3 all-time in combined regular-season and postseason games vs. the Panthers.

GET INVOLVED: Redskins quarterback Brad Johnson wasn’t the only Washington player to have a big day during that dramatic, last-second win over the Panthers in the 1999 season. Which Redskins wide receiver caught eight passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns that same day? Go to the Redskins Facebook page to answer.
