Hurricane Sandy On Minds Of Players

In case you weren’t aware, a strong storm is currently barreling its way towards the East Coast.

The Washington Redskins, meanwhile, safely landed home tonight after flying from Pittsburgh and their loss to the Steelers.

Hurricane Sandy is obviously on the minds of many who are preparing for the worse, including those in the D.C. area. Evem Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was asked about the storm after today’s game.

#WASvsPIT: Fourth Quarter Conclusions

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 28, 2012 – 3:55 pm

(AP photo)

The fourth quarter began for the Redskins with the same theme of the previous three: a dropped pass.

This time, quarterback Robert Griffin III found wide receiver Aldrick Robinson with a perfectly-placed pass in the end zone for what looked at first like a touchdown, but Robinson dropped the ball — the team’s third drop in the end zone of the game.

That drive ended when Griffin III was sacked by linebacker Larry Foote on 3rd down, setting up a 45-yard field goal by kicker Kai Forbath, which he nailed — making him 7-for-7 on the season — and cutting the Steelers’ lead to 27-12.

The rest of the game continued on a similar path, as the Redskins dropped to 3-5 on the season with a 27-12 loss to the Steelers (4-3) at Heinz Field.

#WASvsPIT: Third Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 28, 2012 – 3:13 pm

The second half of today’s game between the Washington Redskins and the Pittsburgh Steelers got off on the right foot for the Redskins.

Trailing 20-6, quarterback Robert Griffin III found tight end Niles Paul wide open for a 37-yard pass-and-catch — a career-long reception for Paul. Two runs later — one by Griffin III and the other by halfback Alfred Morris — and the Redskins had their second first down of the drive.

But that momentum was killed three plays later, as, on 3rd and 12, Griffin III’s screen pass to Joshua Morgan only went for two yards. Kicker Kai Forbath salvaged the drive with a 48-yard field goal — an impressive kick for a first-year player here at Heinz Field — to cut the Pittsburgh lead to 20-9 with 11:52 left in the third quarter.

#WASvsPIT: Halftime Summations

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 28, 2012 – 2:21 pm

The second quarter today started off with the Redskins driving and into the Steelers’ red zone for the first time in the game.

After a dropped catch in the end zone by wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe — the team’s second dropped touchdown of the drive — quarterback Robert Griffin III tossed to running back Alfred Morris for a six-yard gain. On 3rd and 4 from the Pittsburgh 8-yard line, Griffin III found receiver Joshua Morgan for five yards and the first down.

Three plays later, the Redskins faced a 3rd and Goal from the 5-yard line. With the Terrible Towels waving Griffin III attempted to run it in himself, getting to the 2-yard line. This time, the Redskins attempted to go for it on 4th down, as the Steelers had done in the first quarter. Griffin III’s quick pass was caught by receiver Santana Moss for the touchdown — making the Redskins 7-for-7 on fourth down conversions this season. Moss, by the way, had two touchdown catches last Sunday against the New York Giants, and continues to be Griffin III’s go-to target.

But kicker Kai Forbath’s extra-point kick was blocked by defensive end Ziggy Hood, meaning the Redskins trailed 10-6 with 11:33 remaining in the first half. On the replay, Forbath’s kick looked low to begin with.

#WASvsPIT: First Quarter Recollections

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 28, 2012 – 1:33 pm

(AP photo)

It’s a cold, soggy day in Pittsburgh, as the visiting Redskins and the Steelers have begun their battle at Heinz Field.

The Steelers come into the game with a 3-3 record, but have one of the top defenses in the National Football League. The Redskins (3-4), meanwhile, are hoping to counter with their No. 1-ranked rushing attack to get back to .500 on the season.

Pittsburgh won the opening coin toss and elected to receive, taking the initial 62-yard kickoff to their own 24-yard line.

On their first drive of the game, running back Jonathan Dwyer evaded multiple tacklers and rushed for a five-yard gain. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger struck next, utilizing a pump fake to find tight end Heath Miller for a 25-yard gain.

The Steelers continued their methodical drive from there, getting within five yards of the end zone on an 11-yard pass from Roethlisberger to wide receiver Mike Wallace. Two plays later, Roethlisberger found Miller again for a two-yard gain to the one-yard line to set up a 3rd and Goal. Dwyer’s run was stuffed as linebacker Rob Jackson and safety Reed Doughty got the stop.

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: ‘Skins Take The Field

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 28, 2012 – 12:36 pm

Redskins fans, are you ready for the return of tight end Chris Cooley?

I thought so.

Cooley, who was released by the team during final cuts, was signed last week to replace tight end Fred Davis, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury vs. the New York Giants. Cooley, Capt. Chaos himself, is back in his familiar No. 47, and we have the first video of him taking the field for the first time in the 2012 season with the Redskins.

We also have our usual glimpse at captain and linebacker London Fletcher’s pregame speech. It’s a must-see.

Enjoy:

YOU PICK: Who Shines Vs. The Steelers?

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 28, 2012 – 10:00 am

(AP photo)

Today’s matchup between the Washington Redskins (3-4) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-3) at Heinz Field presents some interesting matchups.

The Redskins come into the game with the NFL’s best rushing attack at 177.7 rushing yards per game. The Steelers, meanwhile, are ranked second in the NFL in total defense and are giving up just 277.3 yards per game.

Something has to give — and the Redskins, obviously, hope they have the plan ready to go off on the Steelers.

The Redskins’ defense, meanwhile, also has lots at stake. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been a master throughout his career of eluding defenders and finding his receivers deep down the field, so getting pressure on Big Ben — and getting it right after the snap — will be critical for the Redskins.

Now’s your chance to choose which Redskins player YOU think will shine vs. the Steelers today:

Redskins-Steelers: Experts Pick ‘Em

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 28, 2012 – 9:30 am

(AP photo)

Last week, less than nine percent of the experts and analysts we use for our weekly Expert Pick ‘Em thought the Washington Redskins could go into MetLife Stadium and get a win against the New York Giants.

Well, they were right. The Giants stole a last-minute 27-23 win against the Redskins, but I’m guessing that not many of those same experts and analysts thought the Redskins would be in the position to win near the end of the game that they were.

This week, a whopping 22.9 percent of those same experts think the Redskins (3-4) will escape Heinz Field today with a win against the Pittsburgh Steelers (3-3). I’ll just be optimistic and say we appreciate the 150-plus percent increase in confidence for Washington this week.

Here’s a look at this week’s various picks:

AccuScore Projects ‘Skins-Steelers Game

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 28, 2012 – 9:00 am

(AP photos)

The computers at AccuScore don’t seem to really think Washington can go into Pittsburgh today and get a win. But the two teams will play regardless.

Anyway, the majority of AccuScore’s projections for today’s game between the Redskins (3-4) and the Steelers (3-3) have to do with the team’s two quarterbacks: Robert Griffin III and Ben Roethlisberger.

Overall, the Steelers won 71 percent of 10,000 AccuScore simulations of today’s game. But those odds go the Redskins way if Griffin III can have a monster game.

That makes sense, right?

Here’s the highlights of today’s AccuScore predictions for Redskins-Steelers, according to ESPN:
