Griffin III Moves Up In ‘MVP Watch’

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has been in Rookie of the Year talks since his outstanding Week 1 performance against the New Orleans Saints, but only the past couple weeks has Griffin III’s name been thrown around for another major NFL award:

NFL Most Valuable Player.

Griffin III today moved up one spot to No. 7 overall on ESPN.com NFC West blogger Mike Sando’s weekly MVP Watch piece, and remains the only rookie on the list.

Griffin III, who first appeared on Sando’s MVP Watch a couple weeks ago, is already a three-time Pepsi Max NFL Rookie of the Week award winner, and he was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Month for September.

Here’s what Sando wrote about Griffin III’s case for MVP so far through seven weeks of the 2012 season:

“The Redskins have a 3-4 record after losing a heartbreaker to the Giants. That makes Griffin the only player from a losing team to earn a spot on the list this week. Griffin joins Michael Vick as the only players in NFL history with at least 1,600 yards passing and 400 yards rushing in the first seven games of a season. Andrew Luck is arguably enjoying a better rookie season. Perhaps he’ll appear on the list soon, too.”

Griffin III is one of two NFC East players on Sando’s MVP Watch list this week. New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is ranked second overall this week, and only trails his big brother, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, as Sando’s NFL MVP.

Eli Manning and Griffin III faced off last Sunday in the Redskins’ 2012 NFC East opener, a 27-23 loss at MetLife Stadium.

Griffin III outplayed Manning throughout the entire game, completing 20-of-28 passes for 258 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed nine times for 89 yards and had several drive-saving scrambles.

Manning, meanwhile, had thrown for just 260 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions before completing a 77-yard, game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Victor Cruz to snatch a come-from-behind victory from the Redskins.

It was certainly an MVP moment for Manning.

But perhaps no player is more valuable to his team than Griffin III is to the Redskins. Here’s his current ranks among NFL quarterbacks:

- Third in QB rating (101.8)
- First in completion percentage (70.4)
- First in average yards per pass (8.5)
- Second (tied) in least interceptions (three)
- Eighth in 20-plus-yard passes (23)
- First in rushing yards (468 yards) and touchdowns (six)

Griffin III is also leading a Redskins offense that ranks fifth in the league in total offense (406.3 yards per game), is fifth in scoring offense (28.7) and leads the NFL in rushing (177.7 yards per game).

CHIME IN: What do you think of Mike Sando ranking Robert Griffin III as the seventh-best MVP candidate so far this season? Do you think he should be higher? Lower? Feel free to comment below.

Hes gonna move up by the end of the season…i see him ranked as #2 or 3…hes gonna turn it up a notch ppl forgot this dude is a winner he hate losing nd will do anything to help the redskins come out with a win…redskins offense wasnt never bad we jus had a bad QB nd now they have 1 i can see them going into the playoff easily next season…this season its gonna be a fight to go into the playoffs cause we havent fix the problem on defense

Michael Vick didn’t have 1600 yds passing in his first seven starts. He had 785 yds pass and 289 yds rushing. I have no idea how anyone can say that Luck is having a better rookie season than RG3.

He didn’t say first seven starts (for Vick). He said first seven games of a season. He wasn’t talking about Vick’s rookie year. So that is even more amazing.

Yeah Luck having a better season then rg3 is comical. Luck is not even the 2nd best rookie. Numbers don’t lie, whatever happened to Luck being most NFL ready?
