Robert Griffin III Among MVP Candidates

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 17, 2012 – 5:28 pm

Perhaps NFL.com Around the League editor Gregg Rosenthal has been paying attention to our MVR(edskin) polls after Redskins wins.

OK, probably not, but after six weeks of action on the gridiron, Rosenthal apparently agrees with you Redskins fans that quarterback Robert Griffin III deserves to be among those in the discussion for league Most Valuable Player.

Rosenthal today released his weekly “MVP Forecast,” and the dynamic Redskins rookie (not named Alfred Morris) came in at No. 6.

Here’s what Rosenthal had to say about Griffin III’s value so far this season:

“He’s transformed one of the lamest offenses in the league to one that can bust open a big play at any moment. The base offense is actually conservative and RG3 runs it beautifully. Suffice it to say, the RG3 Zone was a fun place to be this week as he keeps checking things off his rookie quarterback bucket list.”

That’s some pretty high praise right there.

Griffin III can certainly add to the hype if he goes into MetLife Stadium on Sunday and puts in a good day of work against the New York Giants in his team’s season opener.

But he’s not the only Redskins player recently given credit for having an MVP-type season.

When recently asked which player would win a “NFC East MVP Award” to this point, if there were such a thing, ESPN.com NFC East blogger Dan Graziano today tweeted this:

That’s Redskins outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, who has taken the defense on his back, especially since the season-ending injuries to fellow outside linebacker Brian Orakpo and defensive end Adam Carriker.

Kerrigan doesn’t have the eye-popping stats to this point — though his numbers are still good — but he’s definitely looked as one of the more valuable players to his team, at least by Graziano.
