The Redskins on Sunday travel to New York to take on the Giants in Washington’s latest division-opening game since at least 1970.
That, of course, means it’s the NFC East debut of Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III, who is coming off an electrifying performance in Washington’s 38-26 win last Sunday over the Minnesota Vikings. Griffin III completed 17-of-22 passes for 182 yards and one touchdown along with rushing for 138 yards and two scores on the ground to already become the Redskins’ single-season record holder for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.
The quarterback on the opposing team, meanwhile, also happens to wear No. 10 and has a pretty impressive NFL résumé. Giants quarterback Eli Manning is a two-time Super Bowl champ and MVP, and this season ranks third in passing yards and seventh in passing touchdowns in the NFL.
Several analysts are wondering how Griffin III will fare in his first NFC East game, especially one away from FedExField. The NFL Network’s “Total Access” and experts Darren Sharper and Heath Evans recently guessed which No. 10 would outperform the other on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
Here’s what they had to say:
“I’m buying this. The reason why is you talk about that yardage is because RG3 can supplement that yardage total by not through the air only, but by on the ground. He’s a threat running the football as direct result of the run he had last week in which he goes over 70 yards and out-runs the defenders. This is going to add to his total in this game. Not saying they’re going to win or lose, but I think his total performance total will be higher than Eli Manning.”
“If you look at the match ups, this is why I’m going to sell RG3 outperforming Eli Manning because, again, you talk about the teams [the Redskins] have lost to: Mike Nolan, Jeff Fisher — defensive-structured, disciplined coaches. Marvin Lewis with the Bengals. What do you get with Tom Coughlin? You get fast, athletic defensive linemen, know what they’re doing, know what’s expected of them. I don’t think you shut RG3 down, no, but I do think the Giants win this game; Eli has a better game by the end of the day.”
