Four-time NBA champion and future Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal knows what it’s like to have the pressure of being a top draft pick in a big-time sport.
So when asked recently what advice he had for Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, O’Neal kept it simple.
“I would just tell him to continue to have fun and continue to do the right thing,” O’Neal said. “Keep setting his goals high and trying to reach those goals.”
O’Neal last week was a guest on ESPN SportsTalk 570′s “Tailgating With Bertie And Guy,” which you can hear today and every Thursday from 9:30 to 10 a.m.
O’Neal — who was in the area promoting his work with The Century Council, which includes the fight against binge drinking on college campuses — had some words of wisdom for those who tend to get in four, five or six drinks at a time.
“You don’t need to take the next two and three drinks — that would be wise,” O’Neal said. “Or, if you are binge drinking, make sure you have a designated driver is not drinking. When I was in college, I was always the designated driver. I was always the guy that looked out for the other guys — I was the guy that always made sure everybody got home.”
The theme of the show, of course, is tailgating and football. Bertie and Guy asked O’Neal what his top draft selection is when grilling out.
His answer, again, was simple.
“I’m a simple guy, so I’ve got to get a couple cheeseburgers out,” he said. “Throw some of that American cheese on top and make sure that bun is real toasted, make sure the ketchup is cold. Then, those who don’t want the burgers, then we get some hot dogs boiling in the water. You know, we like to do it real simple.”
Great, Shaq. You made me drool on my desk.
Anyway, don’t forget to tune into ESPN SportsTalk 570 AM today from 9:30-10 a.m. — and every Thursday at that time — to catch “Tailgating With Bertie And Guy.”
