Robert Griffin III: ‘Moms Are Moms’

Jacqueline Griffin’s motherly instincts took over when she saw her son being taken to the Redskins locker room during Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Unbeknownst to Jacqueline at the time, her son, Robert Griffin III, had just suffered a concussion after taking a hard hit to the head by a Falcons defender late in the third quarter.

But she still knew it wasn’t normal for Robert to be anywhere but on the field or the sidelines during his games, so, joined by her husband, Robert Jr., they ventured to the Redskins’ locker room to check on their son.

“Moms are moms,” Griffin III recalled to the media today. “They all came in the locker room … and found me and they made sure I was OK.”

Griffin III was sent home and did not return to the sidelines for the remainder of last Sunday’s game, head coach Mike Shanahan said. But Griffin III knew he was in good hands when he got there.

“I told them I was alright,” Griffin III said, “and they stayed a lot of the night with me that night at my house to make sure I was fine.”

Griffin III, it turned out, was fine; he said he didn’t feel any lingering effects from the concussion he had suffered just the day before.

But that doesn’t mean Mom wasn’t calling at 8 a.m. Monday just to be sure.

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Griffin III Practices

Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III today participated in his first practice since he was taken out of Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons with an injury.

Griffin III, according to head coach Mike Shanahan, suffered a concussion late in the third quarter after receiving a hard hit as he ran with the ball near the sidelines in the Redskins’ 24-17 loss.

Under the NFL’s new concussion policy, Griffin III was tested by team trainers and independent team doctors and ruled ineligible to return, forcing backup quarterback Kirk Cousins to finish the game.

Given the nature of his injury, it was yet unclear if he would be active for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

“[Monday], he has basically rest and testing,” Shanahan told the media on Monday.  “[Tuesday], if he passes the test, he’ll get a chance to get some cardio work – get a little workout in on the treadmill.

“If there are no symptoms – like headaches, dizziness, nausea, things along those lines – then he would be able to practice on Wednesday as long as there is no contact. Then, monitor that throughout the week, make sure no headaches come back or dizziness or things along those lines.”

Here’s some video of Griffin III participating in his first practice since Sunday’s game:

Six Redskins Make All-NFC East Team

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 10, 2012 – 10:48 am

The Washington Redskins have one notable omission from ESPN.com NFC East blogger Dan Graziano’s weekly All-NFC East Team.

Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III, who was among seven Redskins included on last week’s list — which is not a week-by-week evaluation, but a reflection of an entire season’s body of work — was replaced this week by New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

It’s the second time this exact same switch has happened this season.

The Redskins, of course, are coming off last Sunday’s 24-17, roller-coaster loss to the undefeated Atlanta Falcons at FedExField. Though the Redskins (2-3) would certainly like to have that one back, Graziano’s All-NFC East Team this week is an indication that several individual Redskins are playing at very high levels so far this season.

Here’s all the Redskins on this week’s All-NFC East Team, according to Graziano: Read more »

Get Your Reserve Wine, Meet Manley

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 10, 2012 – 10:06 am

Here’s a great opportunity for Redskins fans to get a hold of the team’s special 80th Anniversary wine and meet one of the greatest players in team history.

Former defensive end Dexter Manley will make two appearances at D.C.-area Giant Food stores in the coming weeks, and will be available to sign bottles of Redskins Reserve, an exceptional wine commemorating 80 years of passion and commitment.

During his nine-year career with the Redskins, Manley — a terror off the edge for opposing offenses — became the Redskins’ all-time leader in sacks and won two Super Bowl titles.

Redskins Reserve, meanwhile, will be available for purchase based on availability.

Here’s the details of how Redskins can take advantage of these two terrific opportunities:
