Kerrigan Talks TD, ‘Landover Leap’
Posted by on October 7, 2012 – 9:57 pmRyan Kerrigan has been playing competitive football since fifth grade, and up until last season, he had never intercepted a pass.
Sack the quarterback? Sure, he’s had ton of those in his football career; but, for whatever reason, the interception had eluded the Hoosier native.
And now with two NFL interceptions to his credit, Kerrigan is pretty much another Rod Woodson.
OK, maybe not quite, but one thing’s for sure: whether it’s getting to the quarterback or defensive touchdowns, Kerrigan certainly has a knack for making big plays.
Kerrigan on Sunday picked off Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and returned the ball 28 yards to the end zone, jumping into the waiting arms of the fans in the first couple rows of the FedExField stands.
The play was very similar to his first-career interception last season against the New York Giants in Week 1, when he tipped an Eli Manning pass, snagged the ball out of the air and rumbled into the end zone in Kerrigan’s first-career professional football game.
“I saw the offensive tackle give me a little free ride, like most tackles do when it’s a screen pass and I saw the back scatting and I also tried to trail him a little bit,” Kerrigan explained after the game. “Fortunately, I was right in the throwing lane and I was able to make the play.”
Kerrigan’s teammates weren’t surprised that he came up with another big play.
Defensive end Jarvis Jenkins threw some hefty praise Kerrigan’s way after the game.

WAS-ATL: Fourth Quarter Conclusions

The Redskins certainly had plenty of opportunities to make a statement with a win over the undefeated Atlanta Falcons today.
And though Washington had a 3-point lead into the fourth quarter, it couldn’t eventually keep Matt Ryan and the Falcons’ offense at bay.
The Falcons (5-0) defeated the Redskins (2-3) 24-17 in front of 75,337 fans at FedExField.
The thought on just about every Redskins fan’s mind, however, is the condition of rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.
Griffin III was “shaken up” after suffering a huge hit near the end of the third quarter. He was taken into the locker room for evaluations and didn’t return to the game.
Redskins.com will definitely keep you updated on the latest on Griffin III’s condition.
As for the rest of the fourth quarter…

WAS-ATL: Third Quarter Thoughts
Posted by on October 7, 2012 – 3:21 pmWell, this game just got interesting — and Redskins fans everywhere are holding their collective breaths.
Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III took a nasty hit by an Atlanta defender in the third quarter as he tried to go down near the sideline. Griffin III walked off the field with the help of team trainers and was taken to the locker room for evaluations. His backup — fellow rookie Kirk Cousins — immediately began warming up on the sidelines
The next play after the Griffin III injury was a made field goal by kicker Billy Cundiff, extending the Redskins’ lead to 10-7. Their defense, meanwhile, forced a punt on the next Atlanta drive, setting up Cousins’ first drive as a professional football player.

WAS-ATL: Halftime Recollections
Posted by on October 7, 2012 – 2:27 pm

The offensive woes continued into the second quarter of today’s game between the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Falcons. But this time around, the Washington defense took advantage.
Outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan tipped a Matt Ryan pass and ran 28 yards untouched into the end zone for the game’s first score, putting the Redskins up 7-0 with about nine minutes to go in the first half.
But the talented Atlanta offense couldn’t be held back much longer, as they responded with a 1-yard touchdown pass and catch from quarterback Matt Ryan to tight end Tony Gonzalez that tied the game at 7 heading into halftime.

WAS-ATL: First Quarter Summations
Posted by on October 7, 2012 – 1:40 pm
Those who predicted a shootout today between the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Falcons were in for a surprise in the first quarter.
Neither team got on the scoreboard in a quick-moving first quarter that saw each drive end in a punt for both teams.
We’ll see if the 0-0 score remains into the second quarter of today’s game.
The Falcons used a lot of future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez on their opening drive as they attacked the Redskins in a shotgun formation with four receivers wide and running back Michael Turner next to Ryan.
