Week 4 Power Rankings Roundup

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 3, 2012 – 4:55 pm

NFL experts and analysts last week had apparently already given up on the Washington Redskins, as some of them had the team tabbed as low at 30th in the league in their weekly power rankings heading into last Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

One game-winning drive by Robert Griffin III later, and some of those same experts and analysts are changing their tune.

Though the Redskins (2-2) certainly face their toughest challenge of the season so far on Sunday against the unbeaten Atlanta Falcons (4-0), they’ve certainly gotten a little more respect nationally — at least this week.

Anyway, here’s the power rankings roundup:

Ken Harvey expertise during his great playing career was in one main area: getting to the quarterback.

Harvey — voted as one of the greatest Redskins of all-time — was recently a guest on SportsTalk 570′s “Tailgating With Bertie And Guy,” and talked about that very subject.

The former great Washington linebacker said that as a defense, you break down aspects of your game in layers to truly become dominant:

VIDEO: Griffin III Films Kenny Mayne Bit

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 3, 2012 – 3:54 pm

You just never know which nationally-known journalist is going to show up each Wednesday for Robert Griffin III’s weekly press conference.

A couple weeks ago, it was ESPN columnist Rick Reilly. Today, it was ESPN personality Kenny Mayne, who had already filmed a little bit earlier in the day with the Redskins’ cornerbacks.

Today, Mayne waited until the end to slip Griffin III a piece of paper with his “line” to read for an upcoming ESPN segment.

Here’s some video of that line being read by Griffin III:

Darrel Young A Fan Of Catching Passes

Imagine that — a fullback, whose primary job is to open up holes for his running back, enjoys being part of the passing game as well.

That’s what Redskins fullback Darrel Young said Wednesday, three days after tying a career-high with 40 receiving yards in Washington’s 24-22 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Young earned those 40 receiving yards via his first two catches of the season, 24- and 16-yard receptions, respectively, and said that while he knows his role on the team, he loves having the ball in his hands.

“I haven’t caught a pass until the Tampa Bay game, but that’s what’s fun, man,” Young said. ‘That’s what I like to do — catch the ball in the flats and try to make a play.”

Young said his longest reception Sunday was the result of rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III tricking a Buccaneers linebacker into thinking he was going to throw to another receiver.

Instead, Griffin III dumped it off to Young in the flat, who made one defender miss and was brought down 24 yards later.

‘Skins Newbies Make All-NFC East Team

The correlation between a player’s individual performance and winning is clear, but it was made even more obvious today when ESPN.com NFC East blogger Dan Graziano released his latest All-NFC East team.

The Redskins had five players on last week’s team — which is not a week-by-week evaluation, but a reflection of an entire season’s body of work — after their loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the team’s second straight loss.

But this week, after a road win against the Buccaneers to pull their record to 2-2 on the young season, the Redskins have seven representatives on the All-NFC East team, including a couple new Washington players who are making their first All-NFC East Team appearance of the season.

Here’s all the Redskins on this week’s All-NFC East Team, according to Graziano, with new players in bold:

(Click here for more about the Redskins’ dramatic 1983 win over the Raiders.)

When it comes to classics at RFK Stadium, this one easily fit the bill.

On Oct. 2, 1983, the Redskins fought back from a 15-point deficit with about 7 minutes left to beat the Raiders, 37-35. Quarterback Joe Theismann, who had a spectacular day with 23 of 39 passing and a career-high 417 yards, threw two TDs during the comeback, including a 6-yarder to diving wingback Joe Washington to complete the miracle finish.

Morris, RG3 Early Rookies Of The Year

Posted by Andrew Walker on October 3, 2012 – 9:57 am

(AP photo)

We’re a quarter of the way through the 2012 regular season, and here’s your obvious fact of the day:

The Redskins have two of the top offensive rookies in the National Football League.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III and running back Alfred Morris haven’t been playing like rookies through their first four professional games, and those around the league are starting to notice.

Two out of the three analysts on the NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access” gave Griffin III or Morris the nod as their early rookies of the year. Here’s their rationale:
