WAS-TB: Fourth Quarter Conclusions

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 30, 2012 – 7:54 pm

(AP photo)

The Washington Redskins came into today’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers needing a win on the road to stop a two-game losing streak as the team gets into the meat of its tough schedule.

Though things certainly got interesting in the fourth quarter, a win was exactly what the Redskins earned today at Raymond James Stadium, as they dispensed of the Buccaneers, 24-22.

The fourth quarter certainly didn’t start in the Redskins’ favor.

WAS-TB: Third Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 30, 2012 – 7:01 pm

The obvious advantage of winning the opening coin toss and deferring to the second half is getting the kickoff that starts the third quarter.

That’s exactly what happened for the Redskins in the third quarter of today’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Though the Redskins were unable to score on that first drive of the second half, they were able to continue to milk time off the game clock with the 15-point lead.

The Washington defense, meanwhile, remained stout against one of the least potent offenses in the league.

But the Buccaneers just won’t go away, and got a late touchdown from Josh Freeman to Vincent Jackson, and, heading into the fourth quarter, the Redskins lead the Buccaneers, 21-13.

WAS-TB: Halftime Recollections

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 30, 2012 – 6:01 pm

Up 7-3 three minutes into the second quarter, the Washington Redskins let a terrific opportunity go to waste.

After having two big penalties go their way, the Redskins couldn’t convert on kicker Billy Cundiff’s 41-yard field goal attempt, which sailed wide right.

But cornerback DeAngelo Hall was right there to pick his team up.

Hall’s interception on Tampa Bay’s next drive — his 36th-career pick — got the Washington offense cookin’ once again, and on 1st and goal from the 5-yard line, quarterback Robert Griffin III turned on the burners and scored easily via the rush — his fourth rushing touchdown of the season — and extended the Redskins’ lead to 14-3 with 7:26 remaining in the first half.

Rookie running back Alfred Morris added a 39-yard touchdown run of his own on the next drive, and, at halftime, the Redskins lead the Buccaneers, 21-6. Read more »

WAS-TB: First Quarter Summations

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 30, 2012 – 5:03 pm

(AP photo)

The first quarter started on a sour note for the Washington Redskins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as both teams were forced to punt on their opening drives.

But that’s when the Redskins’ offense got things rolling.

Highlighted by long passes to Darrel Young and Fred Davis — and a 1-yard fumble recovery in the end zone by Pierre Garcon — the Redskins take a 7-3 lead going into the second quarter.

Column: Give RG3 Strasburg Shutdown

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 30, 2012 – 11:23 am

(AP photo)

Should the Washington Redskins shut down rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III before getting the chance to play his first full season in the NFL?

San Diego Union-Tribune columnist Tom Krasovic thinks it would be best for Griffin III and the Redskins.

Krasovic even compares a hypothetical Griffin III shutdown to the one experienced by Washington Nationals star pitcher Stephen Strasburg, 24, whose 2012 season was shut down early after recovering from elbow reconstruction surgery in September 2010.

The basis for Griffin III’s hypothetical shutdown, however, would be to protect him from career-threatening injuries, Krasovic writes.

AccuScore — one of the industry’s leaders in sports projections and simulations — has determined that if Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III has less than 25 rushing yards today against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then the Redskins have a 28 percent chance of winning the game.

Wait, huh?

How do you…? Nevermind. Not going to touch this one. Math has definitely never been my strong subject.

Anyway, ESPN has a video out with various projections and predictions for today’s Redskins-Bucs game, which kicks off at 4:25 p.m. from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

What’s the best of all the projections you ask?
