The Redskins have played the Buccaneers on 19 occasions in the regular season and the postseason combined, beginning in 1977. The 2012 matchup is the ninth game between Washington and Tampa Bay since the 2003 season.
The Buccaneers have played in Tampa since their inaugural season as an expansion franchise in 1976. The Buccaneers’ Raymond James Stadium opened in 1998 and has hosted two Super Bowls (XXXV and XLIII). Tampa Bay trains at its headquarters at “One Buccaneer Palace,” which is located about a mile from Raymond James Stadium.
The Redskins won the first-ever matchup between the two teams, 10-0, on Oct. 9, 1977, at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Fla. In that game, the Redskins scored all 10 of their points in the first quarter – a Mark Moseley 44-yard field goal and a Mike Thomas six-yard touchdown run – before holding on the rest of the way for the victory. The Redskins’ defense held the Buccaneers to just 136 total yards, and had interceptions by Ken Houston and Joe Lavender.
The Redskins played their first game against the Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium Jan. 15, 2000, in the NFC Divisional Playoffs. In that game, the Redskins led 13-0 into the third quarter before the Buccaneers stormed back to win with 14 unanswered points. The Redskins’ Brian Mitchell had a 100-yard kickoff return in the third quarter and also got two field goals from kicker Brett Conway in the loss, while the Washington defense held Tampa Bay to just 186 total yards.
Overall, the Redskins are 4-7 combined in the regular season and postseason when playing games hosted by the Buccaneers, including wins in 1977, 1982, 1993 and 2006. The Redskins on Sunday will seek their first regular season win in Tampa Bay since 1993. Washington’s only win in Tampa Bay since 1993 came in the NFC Wild Card Round following the 2005 season.
The last matchup between the teams saw a 17-16 Buccaneers win on Dec. 12, 2010, at FedExField. The Redskins pulled within one point with nine seconds left in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass to Santana Moss from quarterback Donovan McNabb when holder/punter Hunter Smith botched the snap on the game-tying extra-point attempt. Washington running back Ryan Torain finished with a career-high 172 rushing yards, the most by a Redskins player since Clinton Portis had 175 yards in Week 8 of the 2008 season.
The Redskins are 9-10 all-time in combined regular-season and postseason games against the Buccaneers.
