WAS-CIN: Fourth Quarter Conclusions

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 23, 2012 – 4:23 pm

(AP photo)

The magic that the Washington Redskins’ offense captured in the third quarter of today’s 2012 home opener against the Cincinnati Bengals didn’t carry over into the fourth quarter.

The Bengals, meanwhile, were able to take advantage, scoring two touchdowns early in the fourth quarter and holding on for a 38-31 victory in front of 80,060 fans at FedExField.

The loss moves the Redskins to 1-2 on the young season, while the Bengals are 2-1.

WAS-CIN: Third Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 23, 2012 – 3:26 pm

(AP photo)

After getting six — yes six — passing yards in the first half, quarterback Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins offense took the field for their first drive of the second half of today’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a chip on their shoulder.

Two runs by Alfred Morris later, and the Redskins faced a 3rd and 5 when Griffin III found tight end Fred Davis for a 14-yard catch and a first down. He found Davis again on the next play for 12 yards to midfield, and Washington finally had a solid drive going.

A horse-collar tackle call on Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones put the ball at the Cincinnati 20-yard line, and Griffin III got the ball inside the 10 with a run of his own.

On the next play, Morris, a rookie, spun his way from seven yards out for the touchdown — his third rushing touchdown of the season — as the Redskins got within seven points at 24-17.

It was the first sign of life in this game by the Redskins’ offense, which went 80 yards in nine plays.

It was also not the only terrific drive by the Redskins’ offense, which scored two unanswered touchdowns to tie the game at 24 heading into the fourth quarter.

WAS-CIN: Halftime Reccollections

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 23, 2012 – 2:33 pm

The Cincinnati Bengals began things in a hurry on offense in the second quarter of today’s game against the Washington Redskins at FedExField.

Quarterback Andy Dalton led the no-huddle offense on a drive inside the Redskins’ 10-yard line. But on 2nd and goal, middle linebacker Perry Riley sacked Dalton, and after Cincinnati was unable to score on third down, it lined up for a short field goal.

But the Bengals tried to get cute and fake the kick. It didn’t work. Redskins safety Madieu Williams sniffed out ball carrier Kevin Huber — the Bengals punter — to force the turnover on downs at the Washington 6-yard line.

It was certainly an interesting beginning to the second quarter of action. At halftime, the Bengals lead, 24-10.

WAS-CIN: First Quarter Summations

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 23, 2012 – 1:46 pm

A Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver opened the 2012 FedExField opener with a 73-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage.

I certainly didn’t think I’d be typing that when I came to the field early this morning.

But that’s exactly what happened, as Bengals’ receiver Mohamed Sanu — lined up in the wildcat with quarterback Andy Dalton lined up as a wide receiver — found fellow receiver A.J. Green wide open over the top for the long score.

The Redskins’ offense, meanwhile, responded on their first offensive drive with a heavy dose of rookie running back Alfred Morris, who ran for 10 and 12 yards on his first two carries.

But the Washington offense stalled from that point and was forced to punt three plays later, signifying a less-than-ideal start for the home team.

It was the first of what turned out to be a wild first half of action here in Landover, Md. After the first quarter, the Bengals lead 14-7.

YOU PICK: Who Shines Vs. Bengals?

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 23, 2012 – 10:36 am

(AP photo)

The Washington Redskins open up their 2012 home schedule today as they play host to the Cincinnati Bengals at 1 p.m. at FedExField.

There’s lots of interesting storylines heading into the game, perhaps none of which are more intriguing than how the Redskins are going to react to the losses of defensive end Adam Carriker and outside linebacker Brian Orakpo, who both suffered season-ending injuries last Sunday in the Redskins’ loss to the St. Louis Rams.

There’s several Redskins players who are hoping to have a breakout performance today vs. the Bengals (1-1), who got their first win of the 2012 season last Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

It’s that time to break out the crystal ball and try to predict which Redskins players are going to shine today against Cincinnati:

John Clayton Ditches Slayer For Redskins

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 23, 2012 – 9:26 am

(AP photo)

ESPN’s John Clayton recently struck gold with his “This is Sportscenter” commercial in which he’s blasting the band Slayer and chillin’ in his bedroom.

It’s kind of hard to describe, so I’d just suggest you go watch the video here.

Anyway, Clayton today decided to ditch Slayer and head to FedExField to watch the Washington Redskins’ home opener, as they take on the Cincinnati Bengals at 1 p.m.

The Redskins Blog caught up with Clayton for a couple minutes, who discussed what brought him out to the D.C. area. Here’s the full interview:
