Rick Reilly: Griffin III ‘Off To Super Start’

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 14, 2012 – 3:11 pm

Well, if Robert Griffin III hadn’t arrived on the NFL scene prior to today, he has certainly arrived by now.

That’s because Rick Reilly is on the RG3 bandwagon.

Reilly today published a column for ESPN.com in which he gushes over the Washington Redskins rookie quarterback and his “super start.”

In it, Reilly compares Griffin III to the super-hero action figures that drape his locker at Redskins Park.

“Well, why not?” Reilly wrote. “Griffin is something of an action superhero himself after exactly one game in the NFL. What else would you call a rookie who went into the bleeding-ear Superdome and shocked the New Orleans Saints, 40-32, to become the first QB in NFL history to be named [NFC Offensive] Player of the Week in his first game as a pro?”

Behind Enemy Lines: Rams Edition

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 14, 2012 – 10:05 am

There are lots of interesting story lines brewing for Sunday’s matchup between the Washington Redskins and the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome in Missouri.

And St. Louis Post-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas was kind enough to give us a few minutes of his time to talk about those very topics, which range from how first-year St. Louis head coach Jeff Fisher is hoping to turn the franchise around; how the St. Louis defense is hoping to stop Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III; and how prepared the Rams are to contain the Washington front seven on defense.

Thomas is this week’s guest on our “Behind Enemy Lines” podcast. The full audio interview is below, but here are some snippets from the conversation:

Series History: Redskins-Rams

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 14, 2012 – 7:49 am

The Redskins have played the Rams on 36 occasions in the regular season and postseason combined, beginning in 1937. The 2012 matchup marks the fifth consecutive season in which the Redskins have played the Rams in the regular season.

The Rams, originating in Cleveland in 1936, have since played in Los Angeles (1946-1994) and St. Louis (1994 to present). The Rams’ Edward Jones Dome is located in St. Louis, while its Russell Training Center is located in Earth City, Mo., about 30 minutes northwest of the dome.

The Redskins won the first-ever matchup between the two teams, 16- 7, on Nov. 21, 1937, in front of 3,500 fans at Cleveland Stadium. The Redskins – in their first season in Washington – would go on to capture their first NFL championship three weeks later with a 28-21 win over the Chicago Bears.
