If you’ve ever been inside the FedExField press box, you’ll notice the huge Redskins Sports Illustrated covers hanging on the back walls.
These covers are from the Redskins’ glory years of the 1980s and 90s, and bring a sense of nostalgia to the press box.
If things go to plan this season — and for seasons to come — it seems as if the Redskins have at least one brand new Sports Illustrated cover to hang up.
According to CSN Washington’s Rich Tandler’s Real Redskins blog, a certain Redskins rookie quarterback is on the cover of this week’s East Coast edition of Sports Illustrated — and we’ve got the cover right here:
That’s, of course, rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III; and, as usual, Sports Illustrated does a great job with a play on words in its cover, instead putting an “RG3″ into the last three letters of “SURGE.”
It’d be nice if Griffin III was the Sports Illustrated cover boy nationwide, but I’m hearing a guy named Peyton Manning is on the West Coast SI cover.
This is the second Sports Illustrated cover appearance for Griffin III. He was also on the April 23, 2012 cover:
Griffin III is also the seventh different Redskins quarterback to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated since 1966, when Otto Graham was featured on the cover with Redskins owner Edward Bennett Williams.
That long list of Redskins quarterbacks on the Sports Illustrated cover now includes: Graham, Sonny Jurgensen (1969), Joe Theismann (1984), Doug Williams (1988), Mark Rypien (1992), Jason Campbell (2009) and Griffin III (2012).
I’m sure if Sports Illustrated would’ve been around when Sammy Baugh was playing, he would’ve graced the cover on several occasions.
Here’s a photo gallery of those covers:
