Fan Crew Riding Nine Deep to New Orleans

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 8, 2012 – 2:44 pm

Sammy Suleiman just can’t wait to catch his flight to New Orleans.

A Washington Redskins fan since 1985, Suleiman said he finds himself anticipating tomorrow’s 2012 season opener between the Redskins and the New Orleans Saints more than any other opener in recent memory.

The reason? Suleiman thinks the Redskins are truly one of the up-and-coming teams in the NFL.

Suleiman is one of nine family and friends in a single group attending tomorrow’s game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

“We’re all going to be bleeding burgundy and gold,” Suleiman said as he awaited to board his flight Saturday at Dulles International Airport. “It’s going to be very obvious where the Redskins’ support is.”

Suleiman, who was wearing his Robert Griffin III jersey T-shirt Saturday, said he became a fan of Griffin III’s prior to the Redskins trading up to select the Baylor product No. 2 overall in April’s NFL Draft.

“With all the hype and the anticipation with [No. 1 overall pick Andrew] Luck and RG3 prior to the Redskins acquiring the second overall pick, I was hoping that we would move up and try to get one of the two,” he said. “When we got RG3 I was just very, very happy.”

Suleiman said he’s been happy with the way head coach Mike Shanahan has assembled the Redskins roster since taking over prior to the 2010 season.

“Shanahan’s done a good job,” Suleiman said. “He’s been building the team right for the past two, three years. Last year we won five games, and I’m really anticipating this to be a very competitive, physical team for every game this year.”

As for Sunday’s opener against a team with an offense as potent as New Orleans, Seuliman, a Centerville, Va., resident, thinks the Redskins are up for the task.

“I think this game is going to be a much closer game than most are giving us a chance for,” he said. “And I can honestly say with a straight face that I think the team’s going to be competitive for the foreseeable future.”
