Billy Cundiff knows what it’s like to kick in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, having played for the New Orleans Saints during the 2006 season.
Cundiff said he’s looking forward to returning to the Superdome Sunday, this time as an opponent, as the Washington Redskins take on the Saints in both teams’ 2012 season openers.
“I was down there in 2006 and can remember playing there,” Cundiff said today before practice. “It’s a very loud place, especially since they’ve got a good team.”
Cundiff also talked about what goes through a kicker’s mind when he’s playing indoors.
“Obviously, no wind,” he said. “You’re going to have solid footing because you’re playing on turf.”
Having solid footing, Cundiff said, can make “a world of a difference.”
“So you can go out there, you can be aggressive, you can kind of do your thing, and you don’t have to change or manipulate what you’re going to do because of the footing situation,” he said.
Cundiff — who hit 3-of-4 of his field goals in the Redskins’ 30-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Aug. 29 — said he’s also well-aware of the talented and dangerous Darren Sproles, New Orleans’ kick returner.
“They have a very good returner,” Cundiff said. “I’m going to make sure I put the ball where I need to put it — wherever coach tells me to — and I just need to try to put as much juice as I can into it and kick it deep.”
