The Mercedes-Benz Superdome is expected to be even a little louder than usual when the Redskins travel there Sunday to take on the New Orleans Saints in both teams’ 2012 season openers.

In order to prepare for the noise, the Redskins coaching staff has had the team practice in the team’s indoor training facility this week and has been pumping crowd noise and music described at a “deafeningly-loud” level by at least one team member.

“It’s loud,” rookie guard Josh LeRibeus summarized Wednesday before practice. “It’s something else.”

Series History: Redskins-Saints

The Redskins have played the Saints on 23 occasions in the regular season and postseason combined. The two teams haven’t met since the 2009 season, a 33-30 overtime win for the Saints on Dec. 9, 2009.

Sunday’s game is the Redskins’ third season opener against New Orleans all-time. The Redskins are 2-0 against the Saints in season openers, having opened the 1969 and 1975 seasons with wins against New Orleans by scores of 26-20 and 41-3, respectively.

The Saints, who originated in New Orleans in 1967, have always played in “the Big Easy,” with the exception of the 2005 season, when destruction from Hurricane Katrina forced the team to play its eight home games in LSU’s Tiger Stadium, the Alamodome in San Antonio and Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

The Redskins won the first-ever matchup between the two teams, 30-10, on Sept. 24, 1967, in New Orleans during the Saints’ inaugural season. The game was played in front of 74,937 fans in Tulane Stadium in New Orleans.

The photo above is a photo from that game and depicts Redskins running back Ray McDonald eluding would-be Saints defensive players on a 36-yard touchdown scamper. McDonald was hit five times on the run but broke though for the score.
