Evan Royster Explains Number Change

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 3, 2012 – 4:17 pm

Evan Royster said he felt like “a new man” Monday at practice, as the Redskins prepare to take on the New Orleans Saints in both team’s 2012 season opener.

Royster was practicing for the first time in uniform No. 22 Monday. He wore No. 35 for most of his rookie season in 2011 (he wore No. 25 for part of the preseason before switching to No. 35).

The No. 22 is nothing new to Royster. He wore that number when he became Penn State’s all-time leader in rushing yards.

But, all kidding aside, Royster said Monday the decision to change his number really had no significance. He said he jumped at the opportunity to wear No. 22 when its former occupant, cornerback Kevin Barnes, was traded to the Detroit Lions.

In fact, ESPN’s folks aren’t even predicting a single award will come the Redskins’ way. At least one analyst at NFL.com predicted Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III would be named the offensive rookie of the year.

Redskins Uniform Numbers Update

Posted by Andrew Walker on September 3, 2012 – 1:58 pm

The week leading up to a team’s season opener can at times be confusing for fans who are learning a lot of new names after so much roster turnover during the cut-and-sign bonanza while an organization tries to get down to its final 53-man roster.

One thing that I know always intrigues me (for whatever reason) is what uniform numbers the new guys are wearing on the team.

Well, here are those newcomers’ numbers, as well as a uniform number change by one current player:

The Redskins Historian

(Click here to watch the entire Redskins 2012 Season Preview on “Burgundy & Gold Magazine”)

Can two-time Super Bowl winner Mike Shanahan lead the Redskins to the playoffs in his third season in D.C.? Will the talent-laden RG3 live up to his promise as the Redskins’ QB of the future? What’s the deepest segment on the squad? Did the $18 million salary cap hit hurt the Redskins’ pursuit of elite free agents?

Those questions dominated a taping of “Burgundy & Gold Magazine” at Branded `72 Pit Barbecue on Gude Drive in Rockville on Aug. 27.
