The Washington Redskins announced today that they were releasing veteran tight end Chris Cooley, who has spent all seven-plus years of his career with the Redskins, so that he can pursue a starting opportunity with another NFL team.

Cooley has produced countless memorable moments for Redskins fans over the years. Below is an Associated Press photo gallery of some of his biggest games in a Redskins uniform, including (but not limited to):

Nov. 6, 2005: Cooley has a then-career-high 85 yards receiving in the Redskins’ 17-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Nov. 26, 2006: Cooley breaks two tackles to go 66 yards and score the game-winning touchdown against the Carolina Panthers, sending the FexExField crowd into a frenzy.
Oct. 14, 2007: Cooley has a career day with 105 yards receiving and a touchdown in the Redskins’ 17-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Oct. 5, 2008: Cooley tops his 2007 top performance with 109 yards receiving and a touchdown catch from wide receiver Antwaan Randle El in the Redskins’ 23-17 win over the Eagles.
Sept. 20, 2009: Cooley has 83 yards receiving in the Redskins’ 9-7 win over the St. Louis Rams.
Nov. 21, 2010: Cooley has seven receptions for 91 yards, as the Redskins defeat the Tennessee Titans, 19-16.

When highlighting his carrer, how can you then forget this game http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2005121802/2005/REG15/cowboys@redskins?icampaign=GC_schedule_rr#tab=recap

Maybe the most epic season in two decades for the Redskins, and with the joy of blasting all of NFC East in the last 3 games!!

Hail to Cooley – best of luck for the future.

Chris Cooley,I would have to say that you are the best tight end in the nfl, no matter where you go I will follow in the nfl that is, unless you want to go get a beer sometime that would rock, I own three Cooley jerseys white, red and black and I will own another color for whatever team you play for next. Like to say good luck and hope you stay healthy and have your best year ever.

Shanahan and the redskins organization need to reconsider and get him back as soon as possible A horrible mistake!!!!!!!

I will follow Chris where ever he goes! I can not believe that an organization would support a person who smokes dope over a person who got injured doing his job. What a role model they have selected in the tight end position. I pray that Chris lands with a team who has more respect for him and he earns a super bowl ring to come back and shine in the face of the Redskin organization. As of today I am no longer a Redskin fan!!!!

I am in tears!! I will be a Redskins fan forever, but now I will also be a fan of whatever NFL team Cooley goes too. It looks like we are going to finally have a good quarterback and Cooley isn’t going to be there to get the touchdowns!
Whose bright idea was this anyway? He is a class act and I think this decision is one of the most horrific decisions the Redskins franchise has ever made. This is a terrible, terrible mistake and I predict that this will come back to haunt our team. It’s not to late. Call him back NOW!!

I don’t know what the ‘management’ of the Redskins are thinking! This will come back to haunt you (and all the loyal fans). Chris Cooley is a class act, a true professional, and a force we will have to recon with in the games to come. Through all the miserable years of losing, he was one constant. When in doubt, put the ball near Chris Cooley and he would catch, not drop it, and probably score!

Chris, Thanks for 9 seasons of leadership and wonderful play. Your Fathead has been on my kid’s wall for the last 2 years and I’ve used you as a model for him to follow in this league. You are a class act Chris and the Redskin organization will miss you. We hope that you can enjoy several more years in the league with another club, or even better, that the Redskins get an opportunity to bring you back. Heck, I wanted to see you get some carries at FB! Onward and upward bro. We’ll miss you.

CC other than Donnie Warren (only becasue he lived in our neighborhood) you will always be my favorite TE! For the past 3yrs you have lead my Madden Redskins in catches and yards and one Super Bowl title.. in which that game you had 8 catches for 208yds and 3TD’s… MVP.. we put the Blast on Cinncy!!! I will continue to wear your Jersey proud! I wish nothing but success for you in the future, I hope you sign with a contender that could use your veteran leadership and talent (unsure why we couldn’t have used that in DC.. f’n Shannahan’s).. stay cool Cooley.. You will be missed by this Skins Fan always!
