Morgan’s TD Highlights Homecoming Win

Joshua Morgan grew up in the shadows of Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium and dreamed of one day catching a touchdown pass as a member of the Washington Redskins.

That dream came true Saturday.

Morgan — who signed with the Redskins this offseason after four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers – made a leaping touchdown grab in the third quarter on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Rex Grossman, as Washington defeated the Indianapolis Colts 30-17 in the Redskins’ 2012 preseason home opener at FedExField.

Morgan – a H.D. Woodson High School product who went on to star at Virginia Tech – said he was thrilled to get the TD in front of about 50 family and friends at Saturday’s game.

“It was just a dream come true – a true blessing,” Morgan said. “Just being able to come out here today for my first time playing in FedExField, get a touchdown and to come out with a win like that.”

Morgan finished his day with two catches for 24 yards, and said he made a nifty little move on his defender just before making the touchdown grab.

“We saw the corners playing outside, and I just gave them something tough to make them think I was gonna run an out route,” Morgan said while re-enacting his juke move in the locker room. “And Rex threw a great ball.”

Morgan was signed by the Redskins this offseason after four seasons in San Francisco. He was having a potential breakout year with the 49ers through the first five games in 2011 when he was tackled awkwardly in their win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and broke his leg, ending his season.

It took a while for that leg to heal, but the Redskins were happy to bring him aboard, along with another free agent wide receiver, Pierre Garçon.

Morgan said he’s happy to be productive again – he has six catches for 73 yards in three preseason games – after his recovery status was, at one time, pretty bleak.

“Some people tell you that you might never be the same [or] be able to get out there on the field,” Morgan said. “It’s just a true testament to God – he’s got his hands all over me.”

Morgan said he gave his first Redskins touchdown-scoring football to a child in the stands on Saturday, but said he’ll be pocketing his first one when the regular season hits.

“It’s preseason, so it don’t really count, but I’m definitely keeping the one from the season,” Morgan said. “It was definitely a dream come true. It was real humbling, and a true blessing.”
